Top bands cast spell on Wizard

The North east’s only two day festival has announced two more big acts that are set to perform at this year’s event, held on August 26 and 27.

Indie super-group CAST will headline Saturday night of the two day event while Irish folk rock balladeers The Saw Doctors have been announced as pre-headline support act.

The news follows the announcement that icons of the British music scene, The Stranglers, will headline Friday night’s festivities.

Now in its fifth year, Wizard Festival is an award winning family friendly music and arts festival held each year just outside the magical ancient village of New Deer, Aberdeenshire.

Liverpool act CAST will be appearing at the event as part of their fifteenth anniversary tour of the renowned album ‘All change’.  This groundbreaking album was one of the fastest selling albums of all time released on the Polydor label, outselling the likes of The Who and Jimi Hendrix.

Taking the headline support slot will be Irish rock band, The Saw Doctors.  With 18 top 30 singles this band are legendary for their live festival performances and promise to bring a fabulous Celtic rock and roll show to this year’s event.

Roy Thain, festival organiser said: “We are making sure that the bill is varied and interesting so that it suits a wide range of music fans.  We are really excited about these acts because they will bring something fresh and new to the festival.  Every year the challenge is to try and top the year before and we are convinced that these bands show that we can secure great acts year in and year out.”

Wizard festival attracted more than 5,000 fans last year when acts such as James and the Happy Mondays appeared.  Held on a huge site with a natural amphitheatre and surrounded by some of Scotland’s best scenery, Wizard is less than 30 miles from Aberdeen city centre.   The festival has three stages, a two day children’s programme and camping and car parking facilities.  The site also has a campervan and caravan arena.

Keen to build on its family friendly atmosphere Wizard also has a separate family camping area and children aged 12 and under attend the festival for free.

Roy continued: “We pride ourselves in the fact that Wizard is accessible to everyone, young and old and everyone else in between.  This year we are putting extra effort into the children’s and young people’s programme because we want to make sure that families have plenty to do over the weekend of the event.”

Held over the bank holiday weekend in August, the dates for this year’s event are Friday August 26 and Saturday August 27.

GLASGOW’S ‘LOVEmusic’ IS NAMED IN UK INDIE STORE POLL

The votes are in, the poll has closed and IndieRecordShop.Org, the lobbying organisation devoted to highlighting the contribution of independent stores to music, today announces the names of Britain’s best indie record stores, as voted for by the public:

· England’s choice is Resident, based in Brighton’s vibrant North Laine area;

· The best Scottish indie is named as LOVEmusic in Dundas Street, Glasgow;

· Carmarthen’s Tangled Parrot took the crown as Best Welsh Indie;

· Head, based in Belfast’s Victoria Square Shopping Centre, is Northern Ireland’s choice.
All four stores are participating in this year’s Record Store Day, due to take place on April 16.

The results are based on more than 4,000 votes logged in a public poll on indierecordshop.org, a lobbying and online resource backed by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA), designed to highlight the contribution of indies to the UK music scene.

Kim Bayley, Director General of ERA said, “Our four winners show the diversity and dynamism which are still the hallmark of the UK’s independent record stores and which will be on full display on Record Store Day on Saturday 16 April 2011.”
A full list of Record Store Day releases and activities is available from www.recordstoreday.co.uk.

LOVEmusic, Glasgow:

The rebranded and face-lifted LOVEmusic – previously known as Avalanche Glasgow has remained true to its formula of offering new and pre-owned records and music DVDs. New items arrive six days a week, and the store hosts in-store performances by local and touring acts. Next in the diary is a performance by Dundee’sThe View – who have recorded this year’s Record Store Day anthem, ‘I Need That Record’ – on April 7. Love Music is run by Sandy McLean who has over 30 years of experience in the UK music business , and has worked for Rough Trade, Fopp, Virgin, Fast Product, Avalanche and Bruce’s Records in Edinburgh.
Sandy McLean said, “I’m honoured that we’ve been chosen as Scotland’s best independent record shop. There’s been a lot of hard work put into winning this award; we’ve had to evolve with the changing marketplace. As our traditional student custom dropped off our demographic has gotten older and more discerning; we’ve had to run faster just to stand still. Glasgow is such a music loving city ; there’s a real passion for music here, and we’re proud to be a part of it. Thanks to everyone who voted for us.”

Feargal Sharkey to speak at goNorth

Organisers of goNORTH 2011 have announced that Music Week will conduct a keynote interview with UK Music CEO Feargal Sharkey at this year’s event.

“The event has a unique and fantastic reputation of supporting Scottish talent and the Scottish music industry,” said Sharkey.

goNorth festival director Shaun Arnold is delighted that Sharkey is following in the footsteps of the likes of Tony Wilson and Alan McGee in conducting a keynote. “Feargal is one of the most respected voices in the industry, and someone who has been at the top of our wishlist for a number of years,” said Arnold. “Having someone with his depth of experience is a fantastic addition to our 2011 programme.”

goNorth
is a festival for contemporary and cutting edge music of all genres. It aims to highlight the best emerging talent from Scotland, the rest of the UK, and a selection of international contenders.

goNorth was launched in 2001 to provide a platform for artists from the north of Scotland to showcase for music industry and media representatives on their own patch. The event also offers a series of seminars, workshops and Q&A sessions aimed at all levels of experience, and covering all aspects of the music industry.

Originally hosted in several venues on Aberdeen’s Belmont Street, it briefly relocated to Dundee, before settling in Scotland’s most northerly city, Inverness. goNorth has grown to become Scotland’s largest music industry event and featured over 60 bands across two nights in 2008. goNorth 2011 will take place in Inverness on the 9th and 10th of June.

goNorth features acts across all contemporary music genres, with the line-up split equally between artists from the Highlands and Islands, other parts of Scotland, the UK and the rest of the world. In recent years, the event has brought acts from the USA, Russia, Scandinavia, Australia and the Basque Country to the north of Scotland. The goNorth 2011 compilation featuring a selection of showcasing artists will be released directly to industry via MUSICWEEK.

Selected artists will be compensated with a small payment for their performance. All goNorth showcases, seminars and workshops are free and open to the public, music industry and media are requested to register.
