HOLYROOD CONTINUES ARTS & BUSINESS FUNDING

The Scottish Government has announced it will continue to support the Arts & Business Scotland New Arts Sponsorship Grants (NASG) scheme with £300,000 each year over the next three years, helping to encourage new business sponsorship and boost further private investment into the arts in Scotland.

The NASG match funding scheme, launched in 2006, has seen over 300 new and returning business investments matched resulting in a total investment of over £4 million to the arts, demonstrating that securing new business sponsorships of the arts is still possible, even in the current climate.

Businesses that have seen their sponsorship packages doubled through the grant scheme range from some of the largest corporations operating in Scotland to sole traders and come from a range of sectors including finance, legal, retail, technology, energy and the creative industries. The arts projects supported have taken place in locations across Scotland from the Western Isles down to Dumfries and Galloway and include a variety of art forms from a giant eight foot puppet to parkour (free running), Scots piping, Japanese animation, opera and magic to name but a few.

Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop said:

“The Scottish Government is committed to strengthening economic growth in Scotland. Our track record in creativity and innovation makes this country an attractive place to invest. The hugely successful New Arts Sponsorship grants scheme has increased private investment in the arts in Scotland and that is why we are continuing our funding. This unique approach to incentivising new arts sponsorship is helping our vibrant cultural sector thrive and flourish, at the same time delivering significant benefits to the organisations involved and the whole of Scotland.”

Barclay Price, Director, Arts & Business Scotland said:

“The continued support for this scheme will provide an invaluable tool for arts organisations in encouraging support from business at a time when all recognise the importance of being more entrepreneurial and self-sustaining. The Scottish Government’s investment over the coming three years underlines its recognition of the value of the arts and the role business plays in assisting sustain Scotland’s vibrant cultural life.”

• Arts & Business Scotland is a registered charity which exists to promote mutually beneficial relationships between business and culture.

• 2011 is Arts & Business Scotland’s 25th anniversary.

• The New Arts Sponsorship grants scheme was launched in 2006, funded by the Scottish Government, run by Arts & Business Scotland and administered in partnership with Creative Scotland.

• The scheme aims to increase the number of businesses sponsoring the arts in Scotland and support cultural organisations in their business development.

• Under the scheme an arts organisation receiving an eligible business sponsorship can apply for an additional amount on a £1 for £1 for basis and the business receives additional sponsorship benefits equal to that amount.

BELLADRUM TICKETS ON SALE – 9am THURSDAY (29th)

Bella fans have a chance to secure themselves ‘a place in the fun’ on Thursday 29th September when tickets for the 2012 event go on sale from 9am.

Tickets for the ninth staging of the festival, which takes place 3rd and 4th August 2012, go on sale at 0900 from  http://www.skiddle.com/festivals/belladrum/?sktag=12774 in the form of E-tickets and a limited number of hard tickets via http://www.thebooth.co.uk . First 250 tickets will be held at this year’s price. Thereafter tickets will be £95 each (+ booking fee). Campervan/Caravan tickets and Child 12 & Under tickets will also be available.

Bella has sold out the last three years and in 2011 the festival sold out months before the event so fans are urged to buy early to avoid disappointment. Problems with ticket scammers in the lead-up to the 2011 event has meant that the bulk of 2012 will be sold as e-tickets which are considerably more difficult to scam.

“We will still be issuing some hard tickets for mainly local outlets to sell but these will be very much in the minority this year,” said festival promoter Joe Gibbs. “It’s a shame that we have to concentrate on e-tickets because it limits the number of outlets we can use, but the dishonesty of a few unscrupulous characters has forced our hand. People should avoid buying off social networks, gumtree, ebay etc.”

The 2011 event featured twin Scots rock legends Texas and Deacon Blue plus: Guillemots; Kassidy; Echo & The Bunnymen; Frank Turner; Newton Faulkner; Ed Sheeran; Anna Calvi; Admiral Fallow; Easy Star All Stars; Eli ‘Paeprboy’ Reed; Teddy Thomson ; Little Comets; Dry The River; MC Xander; Young Rebel Set; Roddy Woomble; 3 Daft Monkeys; Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire; Emile Sande; Ben Howard; The Amphetameanies; Lucy Rose; Wooden Box With A Fistful Of Fivers; The Dangleberries; The Staves; The Webb Sisters; Rachel Sermanni; CW Stoneking and His Primitive Horn Orchestra; The Xcerts; Skerryvore; Saint Saviour Benjamin Francis Leftwich; James Mackenzie & The Aquascene; Cousti; King Charles; Suzette & The Neon Angels; Findlay Napier; Diddums; Torridon; Iain MacLaughlin & The Outsiders; He Slept On 57; Tom Odell; Scooty & The Skyhooks; Stetsonhead; Hoodja; Bronto Skylift; The Raghu Dixit Project; The Horndog Brass Band and the Rooty MaToot Big Band.

Knowing Right from Right – Copyright Talk Glasgow

Keith Harris

Songwriters, musicians, artists – they all have one thing in common, in that they create and own intellectual property, and their copyrights are very much the currency they deal in. The whole issue can be a minefield for both creative people and for the record labels, websites, production companies, studios, etc – that record, manufacture and market these works.

MCPS Scotland, together with the SMIA, is hosting a seminar at 6pm on Thursday 13th Oct at The Scottish Music Centre, Candleriggs, Glasgow aimed at untangling the copyright maze.

Speakers will be Stuart Fleming, Senior Member Relations Manager (Scotland & Northern Ireland) for PRS for Music, Keith Harris, Director of Performer Affairs for PPL and Duncan McCrone, Senior Manager MCPS Scotland. They will talk about their individual organizations, the rights they represent and the various income streams artists, musicians, writers and composers should expect from their intellectual property rights. This will be followed up by a Q&A and there will be opportunity to chat over a coffee afterwards.

Keith Harris

Keith Harris joined PPL in 2006. He started in the music industry in 1974 working for Transatlantic – a small independent UK label. In 1976 he joined EMI Records where he initially worked for several in-house EMI labels in the promotions department. These included Rocket where he worked on the Elton John album ‘Blue Moves’, Fantasy, Ariola and EMI International. He then joined Motown becoming General Manager working with artists such as Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. He left in 1978 to work with Stevie Wonder and became Operations Manager for his companies.

In 1982 he formed his own management company and was involved in the management of various UK based artists – whilst also continuing to represent Stevie Wonder. He is a Senior Fellow of the University of Westminster School of Music, Film and Fashion where he has lectured since 1993. He is a former Chairman of the MMF, the managers’ trade body and he is the Chairman of Musictank. He was made an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Westminster in November 2007.

Spaces are limited so please confirm your attendance by sending an email to caroline@smia.org.uk to reserve your place.
