£10 MILLION INVESTED IN SCOTTISH YOUTH MUSIC

A further £10 million is being invested in the Scottish Government’s hugely successful Youth Music Initiative, the Culture Secretary has confirmed.

Fiona Hyslop has formally announced the funding allocation for 2012-13. The Youth Music Initiative offers young people opportunities to get involved in music and supports more than 300 projects each year, covering all musical genres, age groups and teaching methods.

Speaking from Ullapool, where she visited a Fèis Rois workshop for senior pupils in traditional music and song, Ms Hyslop said today:

“At a time when Scotland is facing deep cuts in public spending imposed by the UK Government, my first priority has been to protect the provision of frontline services such as the Youth Music Initiative.

“By maintaining funding for this scheme, we are investing in Scotland’s young people. As well as fostering and developing their musical skills and unlocking their creative potential, the Youth Music Initiative teaches our young people to be innovative, resourceful, confident and responsible.

“Since its inception in 2003, it has been a great success, providing numerous opportunities for children and young people across Scotland to get involved in music. I am delighted to confirm that it is continuing for another year.”

The Youth Music Initiative is delivered by Creative Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government.

Andrew Dixon, Chief Executive, Creative Scotland said:

“The Youth Music Initiative has given thousands of young people the opportunity to learn about and enjoy making music, either in school, or away from school. It’s a fantastic initiative and Creative Scotland will continue working with schools, tutors and professional musicians to ensure that Scotland’s creative future, our young people, are inspired to become musicians of the future.”

Fiona Dalgetty, Chief Executive of Fèis Rois, added:

“The Youth Music Initiative provides many young people with their first opportunity to engage in music-making. At Fèis Rois, we have seen primary school pupils who have had a block of Youth Music Initiative tuition in school then be inspired to join an after school class and then take part in residential music courses. There is a clear ladder of progression and it is wonderful to see these young people grow in confidence and develop a whole range of life skills, as well as musical skills.”

JAM : a celebration of contemporary classical music by the cream of Scottish talent

JAM is an exciting, dynamic organisation committed to nurturing, commissioning, promoting and performing new music in the UK. JAM is aware that audiences can be unsure of contemporary pieces. Therefore it often creates programmes of new and established works, hoping to bring a new audience to new music.

Following 2010’s phenomenally successful concerts, JAM returns to Scotland this week with a celebration of contemporary classical music, performed by the cream of Scottish talent.

The 3-concert tour, JAM: sound theatricals, will go to St Andrews, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, (first Saturday evening, prime slot, in the sound Festival)

The JAM: sound theatricals programme includes a world premiere by Rory Boyle in celebration of his 60th birthday. Click to read interview with Dundee Courier

The JAM: sound theatricals programme includes a world premiere by Rory Boyle in celebration of his 60th birthday, a Scottish premiere by Stuart MacRae and Paul Mealor’s global success Ubi Caritas, as performed at the wedding of The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge.

Wanting to commission a work especially for its Caledonian tour, JAM is very excited to be working with Rory Boyle, helping to bring to life a work he has had in mind for some time. Boyle’s Tallis’s Light is written for brass quintet and organ.

Boyle comments “I first came across Tallis’s perfect little “Hymnus” O Nata Lux when I was a chorister at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, and its simple starkness has affected me ever since. I found it difficult to shake off its sublime influence and so, when I was commissioned by JAM, I felt that this was a great opportunity to mark this ‘friend’ of so many years by making what is effectively a fantasia based on Tallis’s work.”

Keen to continue its commitment to developing young talent, JAM will once again unite the university choirs of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and St Andrews, setting an exciting challenge for these young singers, choirmasters and conductor, Michael Bawtree. Rising stars Tom Wilkinson (organ) and Pure Brass, plus Rebecca Afonwy-Jones and Michel de Souza (both Emerging Artists from Scottish Opera), will join the choirs.

JAM: sound theatricals will showcase Scottish contemporary classical music-making at its best, delivering outstanding performance and technical ability. Together we will bring exceptional colour and dimension to the cultural ecology.

JAM is delighted to be supported by Creative Scotland through its National Lottery investment, enabling our return to this vibrant country.

Ed Armitage, JAM Chairman and Artistic Director comments “I have admired Rory Boyle’s work for many years and am thrilled that he’s written this dazzling piece for JAM, during his 60th birthday celebrations. With amazing acclaim from audiences and media, Scotland has become an essential part of JAM’s schedule. I am delighted to be working here with such inspired composers and performers.”

LIVE MUSIC AT NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SCOTLAND

A brand new addition to the Edinburgh events calendar has been unveiled, giving people a chance to see one of the city’s best known and loved spaces in a whole new light at the first RBS Museum Lates event on Friday 11 November at the National Museum of Scotland.

Supported by The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, the first of the new RBS Museum Lates events will give visitors the chance to explore the galleries, relax with food, drink, DJs, live music and even a silent disco in the Imagine gallery, which is more normally a daytime space for children.

The beautiful, soaring Grand Gallery will be the hub of the event, with pop-up bars and music throughout, featuring Edinburgh based experimental pop act Found with support from Glasgow based Ben Butler and Mousepad and Hip-hop producer and DJ S-type. MC and DJ for the evening will be BBC Radio 1 DJ Ally MacRae, who recently took over from Vic Galloway as host of Introducing … in Scotland.

BEN BUTLER & MOUSEPAD

The Museum reopened to the public in July following a £47 million transformation, and the new galleries will be open, covering themes such as the Natural World, World Cultures, Discoveries and Science and Technology.

The RBS Museum Lates event will give people the chance to see objects in this setting and enjoy some of the interactive displays more usually occupied by children during the day, from Formula One racing to comparing your weight to various animals. There will be some surprises in the galleries as the evening progresses, including some close up creepy crawly encounters and plenty of opportunities to get creative.

Participants will be encouraged to get busy on the night with their phones and cameras, tweeting pictures, live-blogging and talking about the event.

Stephen Allen, Head of Learning and Programmes at National Museums Scotland said,

“The Museum is an amazing, unique place at any time of the day, and so we’re confident that people will have an amazing and unique night. We know that our visitors keen to see the Museum in a more informal and social context – having fun in a museum isn’t just for children but for adults too. The line-up is sure to bring in new audiences and tickets are already selling really well.”

Andrew Wilson, Head of Group Communications at RBS said:

“RBS Museum Lates is a superb way for us to play our part in supporting an outstanding Scottish institution. The programme will inspire more people to learn about Scotland’s history and its contribution to the world. We love the whole venture and are privileged to help make it happen.”

This is the first in the series of RBS Museum Lates, which will be held quarterly in the Museum. Future Lates will be themed with the next in the series coinciding with the Fascinating Mummies exhibition in February.

Act Profiles:

FOUND

FOUND is the brainchild of art college buddies: Ziggy Campbell (lead vocals, guitar), Tommy Perman (bass guitar, synth) and Kev Sim (electronics, percussion). The band create an unusual mix of garage rock, melodic pop and glitchy electronica, which has just lead to them signing a publishing deal with the highly respected Domino Records and record deal with Chemikal Underground. FOUND began life as an experimental arts collective putting on many weird and wonderful events in art galleries, warehouses and even storage containers. They most recently hit the headlines this summer with a limited edition 7” single version of their track ‘Anti Climb Paint’ which was made from chocolate, and also created Cybraphon, the BAFTA-winning interactive mechanical band in a box (http://cybraphon.com/) .

BEN BUTLER & MOUSEPAD

Ben Butler & Mousepad is Joe Howe, from Glasgow, Scotland. He has produced weird, complex, fun, synth-led music under a bunch of aliases, including Gay Against You and Germlin. Recent times have seen Ben Butler & Mousepad tour the United States with Deerhoof, release their first album on London’s LOAF and a 7″ on Oslo’s DODPOP label. Joe wrote an album with Momus and worked on a synthesizer opera about Wendy Carlos.

S_TYPE

One of Scotland’s hottest young remixers, hip-hop producer and DJ S-type was recently signed to LuckyMe and profiled in the Scotsman’s Radar section: http://radar.scotsman.com/viewpost.aspx?id=497

Song of Return wins Big Apple Award!

Following months of speculation over entries from some of Scotland’s best up and coming musical talent, Song of Return won Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland’s Big Apple Award, after a brilliant live performance at The Garage’s G2 venue last night wowed the Award’s judges.

The gig also saw storming mini-sets from the other four short listed finalists Laki Mera, Finding Albert, Wrongnote and Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers, who all received gifts from Guitar Guitar.

Song of Return is fronted by Craig Grant and Louis Abbott, joined by Alex McNutt, David Reekie and Ewan McDonald. The band has played together for two years and released their first album entitled “Limits” in July of this year. Craig said “We are delighted and amazed to be chosen from all the talented bands that played on the night, it’s very humbling as we have been playing together for two years and are now starting to be recognised.”

Winning The Big Apple Award means that Song of Return will play to an audience packed with music industry types at the Scottish Music Awards (the Tartan Clefs) this November, before being whisked away to New York City next year to play a variety of gigs all over Manhattan during Scotland Week 2012. The Big Apple Award is a collaborative partnership between renowned music charity Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland, Creative Scotland, The American-Scottish Foundation and Clash.

Also, whilst in the USA Song of Return will play for Ian Ralfini, president of both Blue Note and Manhattan Records, divisions of EMI in North America.

The winner was selected in a unanimous decision by judges including Mark Millar from Clash, Matthew Rumbold from EMI, Roddy Hart and Yvonne McLellan from Island, and Caroline Parkinson, Director of Creative Development, Creative Scotland. Parkinson said; ‘The Big Apple Award received a phenomenal response from a great many talented artists and bands and the judging panel had a very tough task whittling it down to the final five. The standard of the entries displays the shear wealth of musical talent Scotland has to offer.’

Ciaran O’Toole hosted the night and said to the fans; “We’re not here to take your money for Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland, but you are the future and should take five minutes on your break to check out the Charity and the Scottish Music Awards (the Tartan Clefs) to understand what music therapy and the charity does for these children”.
