Bang on a Can are coming to Scotland

In March 2012 Bang on a Can are coming to Scotland for Glasgow Concert Halls’ Minimal: Extreme and to mark this occasion, the Scottish Music Centre are launching a unique project, a Composition Marathon inspired by the organisation’s iconic performance festivals.

Formed in 1987 by composers Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe, Bang on a Can is dedicated to commissioning, performing, creating, presenting and recording contemporary music. With an ear for the new, the unknown and the unconventional, Bang on a Can strives to expose exciting and innovative music as broadly and accessibly as possible to new audiences worldwide.

This project challenges composers to create a brand new work in the Scottish Music Centre over the course of 8-12 hours on Saturday 24th March 2012, with guidance provided by members of Bang on a Can and other influential figures frequently involved with the Centre.

Following this, on Sunday 25th March, performers will be invited to workshop and rehearse the scores with the composers, culminating in a final performance in the Old Fruitmarket.

Additionally, the centre will be open throughout both days for invited guests to observe and network.

This is an excellent opportunity, offering Scottish composers the chance to work with some of the world’s greatest innovators in contemporary music and of course to receive a performance in one of Glasgow’s most spectacular venues.

To ensure that all work generated by this marathon is new, the instrumental forces assigned to each composer will not be announced until the morning of Saturday 24th March.

To apply for the marathon, composers are invited to submit their CV with accompanying covering letter detailing what they could bring to this project and what they would wish to gain from the experience – all creative ideas and suggestions are welcome!

For more information or to submit an application, please contact Christopher Glasgow, Communications Officer via the link below, call: 0141 552 5222 or write to: Scottish Music Centre, City Halls, Candleriggs, Glasgow, G1 1NQ

Applicants will be notified of their selection (or not) by Wednesday 22nd February and those who are successful will be invited to attend a welcome reception in the centre.

Please note that the minimum age requirement is 18, however, there is no upper limit.

DOUGIE MACLEAN VILLAGE HALL CONCERTS

Dougie MacLean and the Perthshire Amber Festival Team Musicians including Ewan Sutherland, Gina MacLeod, Eliza Lynn (USA) and Buddy MacDonald (Canada) will entertain in this movable musical feast between village halls next Sunday, October 30th. Audience members choose a venue and all the musicians “hot foot it” from one to the next performing in all three halls over the course of the evening. The musicians will appear in some interesting and surprising combinations.

Dougie MacLean

Clunie Hall – 7.00pm (Oct 30)

Clunie Hall, Clunie, Blairgowrie, Perthshire, PH10 6RJ

Although this is the first time Clunie Hall will be used as a venue during the Perthshire Amber Festival this village hall has played host to many Dougie MacLean concerts in the past. As the home of the annual “Clunie Concerts”, which are held every Easter Weekend, the hall already holds a special significance for many people from all over the world who enjoy Dougie’s performance.

Clunie Hall is one of the village halls that Dougie frequented as a child growing up in Perthshire and is also one of the first places he appeared in front of an audience!

Meikleour Hall – 7.30pm (Oct 30)

Meikleour Hall, Meikleour, Perth, Perthshire, PH2 6EB

Meikleour Hall is a village hall at the heart of the local community. Settlement in the area around Meikeour goes back a very long way. Features in the landscape suggest the area was significantly populated as far back as to between 2500BC and 2000BC. To most people, “Meikleour” is a name associated with the Meikleour Beech Hedge, which since 1966 has officially been recognised as the tallest and longest hedge on Earth. It was planted in 1745 by Robert Murray Nairne and his wife Jean Mercer of Meikleour. Legend has it that following the death of her husband at the battle of Culloden, Jean Mercer allowed the hedge to grow towards the heavens in a tribute to his memory. This incredible living wall of beech trees (100 ft high and a third of a mile long) is at its most spectacular in the autumn

Caputh Hall – 8pm (Oct 30)

Caputh Hall, Caputh, Perthshire, PH13

Local architect Ebenezer Simpson was commissioned in the early 1900’s to design Caputh Hall by Sir Alexander Park Lyle of Glendelvine Estate, the current owner’s great grandfather. The hall is a striking community building sited directly opposite Caputh Parish Church. It makes a significant contribution to the streetscape of this picturesque village with a number of buildings retaining the estates colours of blue and white. Simpson’s confident use of picturesque Arts and Crafts elements at Caputh Hall are reminiscent of the work of James Maclaren who designed Aberfeldy Town Hall.
