Scotland’s Folk Musicians Up Their Game With Post-Pandemic Social Media Support – Apply Now

Folk musicians in Scotland are being offered specialist support to improve their presence on social media platforms thanks to a new initiative from some of Scotland’s leading music organisations.

SocialFolk, funded by Creative Scotland, offers musicians the chance to sign up to free one-to-one social media training with social media experts. Gill Maxwell, Executive Director of the Scottish Music Centre, one of the SocialFolk partners, said, ‘The covid-19 pandemic has brought about many challenges for the music industry, not least the need for artists to possess a broad range of skills and knowledge across social media platforms. The loss of live work and need to adapt to new and unfamiliar ways of working in the past eighteen months has brought this sharply into focus.’

The SocialFolk website, which launches on Monday October 25, is according to Lisa Whytock of Showcase Scotland Expo, ‘a one-stop shop Scotland-based traditional, folk, acoustic and roots musicians to hone their digital marketing skills.’

It contains free social media and digital marketing advice videos delivered by top folk musicians including Daniel Gillespie of Skerryvore and former BBC Young Trad Musician of the Year, Kristan Harvey. Harvey who plays with the bands, Blazin Fiddles and Fara said, ‘Getting to grips with social media has been a huge learning curve for me. I’ve invested a lot of time figuring out our audience and where our market is, using the demographic material that the platforms make available.’

David Francis, Director of the Traditional Music Forum, commented, ‘We had discovered anecdotally that many artists are not confident about their social media skills: they are unsure about what content to post, how often and where. Those anecdotal impressions were underscored by the formal survey we undertook in last year in which artists were asked about their understanding of social media, their awareness of various channels and how they can benefit artistic careers in an increasingly digital world.’

The organisers plan to make up to 60 one to one sessions available. Applications will be offered through a form on the website (link below).

Despite the global pandemic, award winning Scottish singer songwriter Dean Owens has found various ways to keep creating and releasing new music, finding inspiration from Leith to Tucson via Dyess USA.

He is honoured to have been invited to take part in the Official Johnny Cash Heritage Festival (broadcasting from Dyess, Arkansas, USA, 15-16 Oct). Dean’s contribution includes some specially recorded songs and a talk about the Cash Back in Fife festival he organised in Fife in 2020, which celebrated Cash’s legacy including his family roots in Scotland.  The festival includes a concert by Rosanne Cash from the living room of Johnny’s boyhood home in Dyess, a starry lineup of performers, plus various presentations and the chance to interact online. Passes are valid for 7 days. An annual event, organised by the Historic Dyess Colony: Johnny Cash Boyhood Home, 2021’s festival is embracing the global potential of being wholly online.

Dean is also delighted to finally see some light on the road back to live gigs, with dates booked for a short south of England tour with guitarist Jim Maving (including London, Brighton and Winchester) in November, before finishing 2021 with pre Christmas shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh, with his Southerners band and special guest Amy Geddes.

2021 started with a virtual live concert, with Calexico musicians Joey Burns and Martin Wenk, specially recorded long distance for Glasgow’s Celtic Connections, described by festival director Donald Shaw as ‘a hands across the water meeting of great songs and minds’

Sinner’s Shrine, the full album he recorded in Tucson just before lockdown, which got the full widescreen, Panavision, desert noir Calexico treatment, will finally be released mid Feb 2022 (a joint release by London’s Eel Pie Records and Netherlands’ CRS). In addition to members of Calexico, special guests include Grant-Lee Phillips and Gaby Moreno. While still rooted in Dean’s signature sound, each song sees him pushing the boundaries, adding some desert noir and Latin notes to his musical palette.

The prelude to Sinner’s Shrine – a triple EP release – The Desert Trilogy – has been released throughout 2021, attracted glowing reviews across genres, and whetted appetites for the full album release.

These recordings are the latest stop on a lifetime’s journey – from the post industrial heartlands of Scotland to the untrammelled wide-open vistas of the American Southwest – as Dean  surrenders to the intoxicating sounds of the US desert states, with themes of love and lust, sinners and saints, the displaced, the wanderers and the border ghosts.

2021 also saw Dean collaborating with Edinburgh author Ian Rankin on a new track (Edinburgh Winter Blues) for the recently released The Wanderer album, tribute to the late, great Jackie Leven.  The album was compiled by Michael Weston King (My Darling Clementine) and includes contributions from Ralph McTell, Rab Noakes, Eliza Carthy, Boo Hewerdine and many more.

Dean has most recently been working with Kirsten Adamson (daughter of Big Country’s Stuart Adamson) helping her develop the songs for her new album, and they will shortly head into the studio for the recording, with Dean producing.

Glasgow Americana returns with yet another strong and varied line up between the 29 September- 3 October

Glasgow Americana will have nine shows this year at six different venues over its 5-day period, bringing some of the best talent from home and abroad to Glasgow.

The opening night will feature UK-based Australian singer-songwriter Emily Barker who will perform in Cottiers Theatre in the West End. Kicking off the night and declaring GA officially open up will be Scottish singer-songwriter, Kirsten Adamson.

Thursday 30 September sees a choice of shows from local favourite and hugely talented Jill Jackson, who will play a headline show in Saint Lukes.

Organisers are so happy to see Nathan Bell making the trip to Glasgow in these troubled times for his Thursday show in The Admiral. Nathan has been steadily building an audience in Glasgow since his debut here at Celtic Connections 2017.

Long Ryders front man Sid Griffin plays The Admiral on Friday 1 October, meanwhile over in the South-Side Nashville-based singer Diana Jones plays a sold out show in The Glad Cafe.

The very talented Scottish singer-songwriter Roseanne Reid will headline the matinee show back in The Glad Cafe on Saturday 2 October, with the equally talented David Latto opening up the show.

Roseanne is doing a double shift on the Saturday and will be performing as part of a ‘Song Writers In The Round’, with Jill Jackson and multi-instrumentalist and hugely talented Cahalen Morrison.

Moving on to our final day, Sunday the 3 October, we are delighted to have the Seven Song Club back at the festival. This year, we will be showcasing Scottish talent, with Man Of The Minch, The Coaltown Daisies and Kirsteen Harvey taking the stage in Room 2.

We are thrilled to welcome My Darling Clementine back to Glasgow Americana as they continue to tour in support of their most recent, critically acclaimed album ‘Country Darkness – the songs of Elvis Costello’. The husband and wife duo of Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish play The CCA at 8pm.

Festival director Kevin Morris said: “I am so proud of this line up, which was put together at short notice and glad to be given the opportunity for the 15th Glasgow Americana festival to actually happen. The fact that a festival like Glasgow Americana can still exist, in what has been such a strange time for musicians, venues and promoters alike makes me happy. I would also like to thank Creative Scotland for their continued support in allowing the festival to go ahead.”
