Bold 5 Year Plan For Scotland’s Music Industry

Click to visit Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) websiteThe Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) today revealed ambitious plans to create a stronger, more united music industry in Scotland

The five year plan outlines the SMIA’s core objectives and sets out an ambitious programme of events and initiatives designed to engage and attract members on an industry-wide level.

The SMIA Business Plan and Strategy Document 2011 – 2016 is available at: www.smia.org.uk/business-plan

An industry led membership body, the SMIA’s objectives are to strengthen the music industry internally while championing its value and quality on both domestic and international stages. This will be achieved through the employment of three key strategies:

• celebrate and promote all musical endeavour in Scotland

• stimulate growth and job-creation at local, regional, national and international levels

• communicate more effectively, engaging with (and uniting) a diffuse industry populated with a myriad of small and medium enterprises across a spectrum of genres and sectors

The SMIA will be responsible for delivering a number of high-level networking events, regional trade fairs and continuing professional development for its members. The Association’s plan includes a number of exciting new developments including an annual programme of Independent Label Markets across Scotland, designed to bring together a range of independent labels, self-releasing artists and the music loving public. There will be a programme of bespoke professional training delivered in partnership with the Music Managers Forum which will help improve the skills of professionals in key areas like international music publishing and contract negotiation.

The SMIA also has ambitious targets to grow its membership with the stated objective of achieving full financial self-sufficiency within five years.

Tam Coyle, Chair of the Scottish Music Industry Association, said;

‘The SMIA has enormous potential. We have an excellent board with an appetite to change Scotland’s music industry for the better; the events and initiatives currently being developed are enormously exciting and should help the SMIA to become a unifying, proactive advocate for Scotland’s music industry.

‘By driving our membership recruitment, the SMIA can employ its financial resources into delivering initiatives for the industry, by the industry, without having to rely on external funding in the longer term.’

The SMIA will be supported by Creative Scotland investment during this key developmental phase, investment which recognises the Scottish Music Industry Association as a partner in delivering Creative Scotland’s aims of growing the cultural economy, stimulating growth within Scotland’s creative industries and maximising its global export.

Caroline Parkinson, Director of Creative Development at Creative Scotland, said;

‘Creative Scotland works with networks across a range of arts and creative disciplines and we are delighted to begin working with SMIA and its newly developed plans for their work with the Scottish music industry.

In addition to supporting its work in Scotland, Creative Scotland has tasked the SMIA with delivering Scotland’s presence at South By South West (SXSW) Music Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas in March next year.

Additionally we will lend support to SMIA in delivering those plans by providing capacity in the form of a one year secondment, which will give SMIA a foundation to build from.’

SMIA Board member, Stewart Henderson of Chemikal Underground, said;

’Delivering SXSW allows the SMIA to deliver on its two core objectives. We can promote and champion Scotland’s musical success overseas while using the consultation processes required at home to strengthen and shape our international showcasing strategies moving forward. Placing the music industry at the heart of these policy decisions will ensure we can deliver a strategy that’s meaningful and productive, offering substantial returns for the industry, from artists and labels through to managers, promoters and our partners in the media.

Further support during this key stage of development has been provided through the secondment of Creative Scotland Development Officer Stuart Thomas for one year to work as Operations Manager at the SMIA. Stuart will work across the full range of our activities with direction from the SMIA board, taking a lead role in the Association’s delivery of Scotland’s SXSW presence.

The Tartan Clefs 2011 – The Winners!

The 13th annual ‘Scottish Music Awards – the Tartan Clefs’ at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket saw exciting performances from artists including Kassidy, Frightened Rabbit, the Rezillos, Song of Return, Big Country and chart-topping singer/songwriter Emeli Sandé. Sandé, who opened the ceremony with hit single ‘Heaven’, wowed the assembled leaders of the Scottish music industry with an exclusive performance of her latest track ‘Daddy’, due for release on November 27th.

Lana del Rey made a surprise appearance in support of the charity ‘Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland’ which organises the Awards, to present Kassidy with the ‘Silverburn Most Stylish New Artist Award’.

The Scottish Music Awards raises much needed funds for the charity, which receives no statutory funding and this year has celebrated its’ 15th anniversary in Scotland through a series of new initiatives; including the launch of Creative Scotland’s Big Apple Award, which will see Song of Return play a variety of gigs all over Manhattan during Scotland Week 2012.

In another surprise twist to the glittering night of stars, Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, presented the inaugural ‘Nordoff-Robbins Special Recognition Award supported by Glasgow City Council’ to Karen Mathieson, head teacher of Howford School in Crookston, where Emeli Sandé recently took part in a Nordoff-Robbins music therapy session. Karen was asked to the Awards as a guest of charity Executive Directors Mary Brown and Janet Halton, who kept her award a closely guarded secret.

Councillor Matheson said; “Karen regularly goes that extra mile for the charity and the children under her care, many of whom have learning difficulties and autism disorders. She has devoted the past seven years to guiding the development of her young pupils and her passion for music therapy is reflected across all aspects of her school’s culture. Karen is both inspiring and humble; she is a credit to her school community and someone that Glasgow and Scotland should be justifiably proud of.”

TIME Magazine regards Glasgow to be “Europe’s Secret Capital of Music”, with the city hosting on average 130 music events every week (more than any other Scottish city) which generate an estimated £75m to the city’s economy each year.

Richard Park, Executive Director of Global Radio, Scottish media personality, businessman and former broadcaster, won the ‘Sunday Mail Industry Award’. Park began his career as a DJ on the offshore pirate station Radio Scotland in 1966, before moving to the fledgling BBC Radio 1 network as a presenter. Park then joined Radio Clyde before becoming Programme Controller at Capital Radio in 1987, where for fourteen years he was responsible for breaking new talent including Pete Tong, Tim Westwood and Neil Fox and creating Wildstar Records in 1996 among other moves. Park eventually set up on his own in 2001, before joining Global Radio in 2007.

Other charity supporters included Fiona Hyslop MSP, Ian Rankin, Tippie Hedron & Greg Kane, a 2005 recipient of the coveted Lifetime Achievement Award, Roddy Hart, Bobby Bluebell, a 2010 Singer/Songwriter Ticketmaster UK award winner, and Capital FM DJ Des Clarke.

Organisers launched the ‘King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut Best Live Band Award’ won by emerging hot Scottish indie band Frightened Rabbit, ‘Capital FM’s Best breakthrough Artist’ went to Emeli Sandé, and the ‘goNORTH Emerging Business Award’ went to Inverness based concert organisers ‘CK Events’. The ‘Sir Reo Stakis Foundation Legend Award‘ went to The Rezillos.

Other Awards on the night included ‘Ticketmaster UK’s Pride of Scotland Award’ won by Scottish rock band Big Country, who have recently made high profile appearances at the Isle of Wight Festival, T in the Park, Oxegen and V Festivals, reunited with legendary producer Steve Lillywhite for the first time in 27 years, and announced a new tour of the UK for February 2012.

Graham Bell of independent Scottish retail group Guitar Guitar presented the ‘Guitar Guitar Musical Instrument Award’ to Jim Dunlop from family orientated global music industry suppliers Dunlop Manufacturing Inc. Dunlop flew in all the way from California, and donated a previously unseen 2 metre tall 36 stone statue of comic strip legends Lobey Dosser to the charity auction. The statue was a prototype of the one commissioned in 1989 as part of Glasgow’s 1990 bid for the City of Culture status.

Dunlop said; “Eighteen years ago I bought the replica of the Lobey Dosser statue with the intention of taking a piece of Glasgow over to California, I’d even picked out the spot on the lawn! Sadly Lobey never made it across the water, but this week I’m hoping to keep it in Scotland and carry on its legacy.

“It’s hard to part with Lobey, but donating him to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland will hopefully raise plenty of money and allow them to continue their work in Scotland. Working in the music industry my whole life, I’ve definitely seen the positive effect music can have on people’s lives and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland help give that to people every day.

“I hope the auction will give Lobey Dosser a new chapter in its journey round the world and in doing so, honour Bud’s legacy and help the people of Scotland.”

Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland is Scotland’s largest specialist music therapy charity, and needs to raise almost £400,000 a year to operate. The Scottish Music Awards – the Tartan Clefs are the main source of funding for the charity, for every £1 that is successfully raised, every penny will go towards supporting music therapy.

Held to raise money for Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland, the Scottish Music Awards is an important date in the Scottish event calendar, fast making its mark upon the music industry as the ‘Scottish Brits’, and receiving international media attention. The charity, which receives no statutory funding, relies on the event as its largest and most prominent fundraiser.

The unique combination of music and therapy that Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland offers is both a release and sense of fun for the individual through the power of music. Unique to other forms of therapy, the concept of taking our creative side and combining this with alternative modes of therapy is revolutionary; illustrating that music has strong healing qualities.

Want to Open Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Main Stage?

Click here to go to Hog the Street website

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES 6PM FRIDAY 25 NOVEMBER!!!

Organisers of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2011/12 are delighted to announce today, the launch of ‘Hog the Street’, the new bands competition which will see Scotland‟s best new acts busk it out for the chance to kick off the world‟s greatest New Year party, Edinburgh‟s Hogmanay. Opening the Concert in the Gardens – the music and fireworks spectacular – the winning band will be joining the bill alongside headliners Primal Scream and special guests Bombay Bicycle Club and Sons & Daughters.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay have joined forces with Leith Records to find the cream of the crop of unsigned Scottish music to kick start the world‟s biggest New Year celebrations. Edinburgh‟s Hogmanay has long since championed new Scottish talent, each year presenting the very best up-and-coming acts and over the years has provided a starting platform for some of the country‟s biggest artists including KT Tunstall and Franz Ferdinand. Last year‟s competition winners ‘Kitty the Lion’ started the Street Party on the Waverley Stage in front of thousands alongside headliners The Coral.

Ten lucky finalists will be selected by judges to compete in a live busking final which will take place on Princes Street, Edinburgh on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 December 2011 for the coveted opening slot at the Concert in the Garden. The band who raise the most money during their busking set get the gig, with all money raised through the event going to charity.

Pete Irvine, Festival Director, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, said: “The line-up for the Street Party and Concert in the Gardens is world class this year, and we are delighted to be able to include a new, young, unsigned Scottish band amongst such acts as Primal Scream, The Vaccines, Friendly Fires and Bombay Bicycle Club.”

Jim Wolff, Co-Founder, Leith Records, said: „Band competitions can sometimes be a bit cheesy and stale, but with Hog The Street we‟re giving new Scottish bands the chance to play one of the biggest gigs of the year, maybe even of their lives. ‟

So, how does it all work… Any band from or based in Scotland can enter, but judges will be looking out for younger, up-and-coming bands in particular (participants must be aged 16 yrs or over to enter). Bands will need to submit a short bio, track, video and picture at www.hogthestreet.com to make the shortlist. Deadline for entry is 6pm on Friday 25th November. Ten acts will then be selected to play at the special „Hog the Street‟ busking event in Edinburgh city centre.

Anna Meldrum from 2010 Winners ‘Kitty the Lion, said: „We were totally thrilled to have the opportunity to play on the Waverley Stage, every surreal second of it felt like a really brilliant dream, but there was no blinking ourselves awake at the end! To be included amongst a line-up of such successful artists, at the best New Year celebration in the world, was incredibly special and we are very grateful to have been given the chance‟.

Leith Records (http://www.leithrecords.com) is the latest project to come out of The Leith Agency, providing a stage for new music and home-grown artists across Scotland. It has helped provide unique musical experiences for the Mountain Bike World Cup, the Leith Festival and Edinburgh‟s Hogmanay.

Tickets are already available for the city‟s world famous Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party; which features a world class line-up over 7 live music stages, with artists including Primal Scream, superstar DJ Mark Ronson, Festival favourites The Vaccines and Friendly Fires, Sons & Daughters, Wild Beasts and Kassidy.

Revellers can purchase tickets for the Edinburgh‟s Hogmanay Street Party, Concert in the Gardens and The Keilidh in one of three ways:

Online at www.edinburghshogmanay.com; by calling the Edinburgh‟s Hogmanay Box Office on 0844 894 2011 or by contacting Tickets Scotland, 127 Rose Street or Ripping Records, 91 South Bridge, Edinburgh

As well as the events taking place on the 31st December, a varied festival programme of events takes place over the four days of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay which runs from Friday 30 December 2011 until Sunday 1 January 2012.
