——————————

The Scottish Music Industry Association have announced the inauguration of The Scottish Album of the Year Award. The SAY Award will place its focus on artistic merit rather than sales history, genre or label affiliation, offering £20,000 to the winning album and £1,000 to each of the nine runners-up.

Eighteen months in development, the award is the product of a comprehensive and ambitious consultation process which has involved sectors and genres from throughout the music industry. SMIA has said that they’ve strived to deliver a qualitative arts prize for music which is discerning without being elitist and is worthy of the exceptional music it aims to celebrate.

The Scottish Album of the Year Award is an ambitious new national prize established to reward and promote the diversity and creativity of music and art in Scotland. Developed by the Scottish Music Industry Association, in partnership with Creative Scotland, the award recognises the most outstanding albums released by Scottish artists in 2011. With an initiative of this scale, scope and ambition, the SMIA hopes to reassure its members (both current and prospective) that we have a vision for the music industry in Scotland that is bold and progressive.

Employing a progressive format and a clear commitment to engage with all sectors of the music industry, the award will provide a unique platform from which Scotland’s finest albums can be championed. The relationship between music and art is recognised too, with a £20,000 art commission offered to graduates from Scotland’s four principal art schools. The successful graduate will produce a unique artwork for each of the shortlisted finalists.

Determining which albums constitute The SAY Award Long List is the responsibility of 100 impartial ‘Nominators’, invited by the SMIA to participate and drawn from genres and sectors across the music industry and the arts.

Nominators are asked to consider eligible releases from 2011 and nominate their five favourite albums, ranking them in order of preference (1st = 10 pts; 2nd = 8pts etc.) before sending their ‘Top 5′ to the SMIA for collation and scoring.

After all of the Nominators’ submissions have been calculated and verified by an independent auditor, the 20 highest-scoring albums will be announced as The SAY Award Long List.

Courtesy of the SAY Award App you can instantly access this Long List. Over the course of four weeks from April 16th, you’ll have the opportunity of listening to all twenty albums, sharing your preferred short lists on Facebook and what you think of the albums via Twitter.

Every weekday from April 16th one album from the long list will become the Album of the Day: available to stream in its entirety (and free of charge) for 24 hours.

If you miss an album during the week, don’t worry: you can catch up on all five of that week’s featured titles over the weekend when they become available to stream throughout Saturday and Sunday.

While you’re delving into the twenty titles, so will the eleven-strong Judging Panel (10 judges plus a Chairperson). Based solely on musical and artistic merit it will be their task to vote on which ten albums from the long list go forward as The SAY Award Short List.

PUBLIC VOTE

Crucially, you can vote too once you’ve listened to all twenty albums: for 24 hours on May 14th you can vote for your favourite album from the Long List with the album receiving the most public votes securing a place on the Short List. If the Judging Panel’s Short List does not include the public’s choice then they’ll have to demote one of their choices in order to make way for the public’s favourite.

The judging panel will then be asked to reconvene for the award ceremony on June 19th, when they will choose a winner of the inaugural Scottish Album of the Year Award.

GET THE SAY APP. IT’S FREE

You can acquaint yourself with every one of the albums on the twenty-strong long list by downloading the SAY App from April 12th. Available on iPhone and Android formats, these rather natty gizmos will allow you to stream an Album of the Day, in full and for free, over the four week long list promotion period. Arrange the albums to form your preferred Short List and share that list on Facebook. Tweet your thoughts on each and every one of the long listed albums and vote for your favourite on May 14th. Use the apps to purchase the albums from iTunes or find your nearest record shop and support high street retail.

Travis and Wombats to headline Bella 2012 as tickets fly

To buy tickets for Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival click hereScots indie stars Travis and Liverpool rockers The Wombats are to headline the ninth Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival (3rd & 4th August 2012; Beauly, Inverness-shire), which has sold out each of the past three years.

For Saturday headliners Travis, the occasion will mark a Scottish festival exclusive in 2012.

The Wombats come to the festival with a raft of hit tunes and on the back of a barnstorming performance on the main stage at last year’s RockNess.

These headliners are joined by a stellar line-up of other acts which include: UK award-winning queen of soul Beverley Knight; Glasgow-based indie rockers Frightened Rabbit in an exclusive Scottish festival appearance, and making good their promise to come to Bella after having to disappoint fans last year due to touring commitments in the US; up tempo US songsmiths We Are Scientists; introspective pioneers of indie folk Slow Club and crafters of beautiful folk rock Fink.

Celtic tune’n’groove folk artists Treacherous Orchestra will be making a reappearance at Bella. Singer/songwriter hot tips Juan Zelada and Ryan Keen will grace the Black Isle Brewery Grassroots Stage as will new indie tyro’s Bastille and To Kill A King. Edinburgh singer/songwriter Nina Nesbitt and hip hop duo Stanley Odd from the same city, and Glasgow three-piece Fatherson have also been recruited to the line-up.

No Bella would be the same these days without the Borders Celtic rockers, The Dangleberries who are also confirmed. Also featuring will be on-the-up Highland artistes James Mackenzie, Ian McLaughlin & The Outsiders, Whisky River Band, and The Red Kites whose front-man Moteh Parrott hails from Inverness.

Belladrum fans have been urged to buy their tickets now, as early bird tickets have gone and standard tickets are being snapped up at a rate well ahead of last year’s event which sold out months in advance. Festival director Joe Gibbs issued a plea to buyers and sellers of unwanted tickets to use safe, ethical means of transferring their tickets. “After the event has sold out in the past three years, sadly we have heard of quite a number of our customers being scammed by touts. Our web site www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk has details of how to transfer e-tickets and printed tickets safely,” he said.

Belladrum 2012 takes place in the beautiful Highland surroundings of Belladrum Estate, near Beauly in Inverness-shire. The independent festival has built a reputation for its eclectic line-ups, its off beat non-musical entertainments and its all-ages approach. The festival won a VisitScotland Thistle Award in 2009 and is a past winner of the Grassroots Festival Award at the UK Festival Awards, the festival industry’s ‘oscars’.

Advance adult weekend tickets are £95. They include parking and camping, except for campervans and caravans which will be charged £50 per vehicle or £130 to include electrical hook-up. As in previous years, tickets for children 12 & under are free.

Online e-tickets are available from Skiddle (www.skiddle.com); limited numbers of printed tickets are available from TicketScotland (www.tickets-scotland.com) in Edinburgh, and Glasgow, One-Up in Aberdeen, The Ironworks, Mania, Hootenanny’s and Eden Court in Inverness; Sweet Treats in Dingwall, Sound & Vision in Elgin, Morrison’s Ironmongers in Beauly and Kiltarlity Post Office.

BORN TO BE WIDE HOLDS MUSIC JOURNALIST SEMINAR

click to visit the Born To Be Wide facebook pageSome of Scotland’s most prolific music journalists are set to take part in Born To Be Wide’s forthcoming seminar at Edinburgh’s Electric Circus on Thursday 8 March. The discussion will explore how to get press coverage, explain how editorial decisions are made and what artists should include in their press biographies

Taking part will be Claire Sawers, Music Editor at The List, Edinburgh Evening News’ Gary Flockhart and David Pollock, who has written for almost every newspaper and music publication in the UK.

They will be joined by award-winning journalist Sue Wilson, who covers folk and roots music for the Sunday Herald and Songlines, as well as writing the Celtic Connections brochure and artist biogs.

“These guests cover a diverse range of music and are often the first to write about new acts. This is an incredible opportunity to hear about how they choose who to feature,” says Born To Be Wide co-organiser Olaf Furniss, who has written for music industry titles such as Billboard and Music Week, and along with Derick Mackinnon pens the Under The Radar column in The Scotsman.

Following the seminar the panel participants will stay at the venue to DJ with records selected from Edinburgh’s Oxfam record shops, receive CDs and meet audience members. Everything played will be for sale with proceeds going to the charity.
