This Friday (4 May) well known Scottish alt.blues musician Dave Arcari will be clean-shaven for the first time in over 20 years – all in a good cause, as he’s raising funds for Yorkhill Children’s Foundation.

River City star – and real-life hairdresser  – John Comerford will give the bluesman a shave at Alice Rocks Hairdressing in Glasgow’s West End (Gibson Street) at 11am on Friday.

The ‘first cut’, however, will be made by Dundee lawyer Alison Mitchell who’s name was drawn from the list of eligible folks who have made donations via Dave’s justgiving.com web page.

“To make it all a bit more fun I decided that anyone who donated £20 or more and wanted to chop off the long bit of my beard would be entered into a draw to do the dastardly deed,” explains Dave

Dave chose Yorkhill Children’s Foundation as the charity beneficiary to support the fundraising efforts of East Loch Lomond teenager Ben Fraser who’s been receiving treatment at Yorkhill since being diagnosed with leukaemia last summer.

RECORD STORE DAY 2012 – 21 APRIL

click to go to Record Store Day's UK website

Record Store Day came into being in 2007 when over 700 independent stores in the USA came together to celebrate their unique culture. The UK followed suit and 2012 will see the fifth celebration of the UK’s unique independent sector.

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, meet & greets with artists, DJ’s, in store quizzes and many other events.

Watch a special interview featuring Sex Pistols and Public Image Limited frontman John Lydon, Beth Ditto and Gossip, and Rough Trade East and Record Store Day organiser, Spencer Hickman, talking about the Official Record Store Chart and the importance of your local record shop here – http://bit.ly/JeeQeBA typical Record Store Day event

We’ve listed on this page many of the Scottish record shops and given a flavour of planned special events – apologies for any that we’ve missed – so get down to your local store on the 21st, but more importantly make that store a best friend that you visit on a regular basis.

click to go to Wickerman ticket siteWickerman (Friday 20th & Saturday 21st July) one of Scotland’s best-loved summer music and arts festivals, has revealed its hotly anticipated line-up for 2012, with monumental New York pop stars Scissor Sisters and top Scottish popsters Texas revealed as headliners for the main Summerisle Stage.

Set to be one of the hottest parties of the summer, Scissor Sisters’ unique breed of glam pop will top the bill on Friday 20th July, as the band debut material from their eagerly anticipated new album. Folk rock heroes Levellers, Britpop icons Cast, Scottish indie rockers Bis, five-piece indie pop band Dog is Dead and American songstress Jenny O will also take to the stage on the first full day of the festival.

On Saturday 21st July, Sharleen and the boys will be performing their beloved back catalogue of hits in their only Scottish festival appearance this year. They are joined on the Summerisle line up bill by very special guests, crowd-rousing Dundee rockers The View, ‘Dream Catch Me’ singer / songwriter Newton Faulkner, Scots indie-folk outfit Kassidy, Northern Ireland’s critically-acclaimed Duke Special and hotly-tipped British indie band, The Heartbreaks.

Now in its eleventh year, the festival will once again come to a spectacular climax with the legendary Saturday night lighting of the Wickerman: followed this year by a DJ set from Mike Skinner, and a promise to keep the Wickerman party stoked into the wee small hours.

A valued platform for championing Scottish music, Wickerman prides itself on presenting the best up-and-coming acts in the Solus Tent, and this year is no exception. A bill of talented artists is led by Malcolm Middleton’s innovative instrumental band Human Don’t Be Angry, experimental rock group United Fruit, the newly assembled Anderson McGinty Webster Ward and Fisher and the acclaimed Beerjacket to name just a few.

Catering for every music taste, Skiddle’s Bass Camp tent entitled ‘2012 – A Bass Odyssey’ has a vibrant line up of DJs to add to the mix with BBC Radio 1’s ‘In New DJs We Trust’ Jordan Suckley, Yousef, Kryder, D.O.D and ex-Coronation Street star Graeme Hawley all preparing to be part of one of Scotland’s biggest summer parties.

Wickerman Festival Coordinator Helen Chalmers is delighted to be revealing the first names for the 2012 event. She commented: ‘We are incredibly excited to be unveiling this year’s line-up which is classic Wickerman – an eclectic mix of established, emerging and retro artists that will deliver some fantastic performances across the two days of the festival. From Texas stirring the Summerisle crowd into a sing-a-long frenzy with their incredible set of hits, to the fun and infectious energy of the Scissor Sisters or the very best new talent in the Solus Tent – Wickerman offers two days of fantastic music for all tastes and ages, all blended with our relaxed, fun, friendly festival atmosphere.’

Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears is thrilled his New York band are headlining Wickerman Festival on the Friday night: “We are so excited to play at Wickerman Festival this year. The UK has always been our spiritual home, and Scotland has especially proven to be some of the best audiences we have ever experienced – and with all the great hype we have heard about Wickerman, it is sure to be a great show!”

Sharleen Spiteri is also looking forward to be heading to the beautiful Dumfries and Galloway countryside in July to bring Texas to Wickerman for the first time. She commented: ‘We’re delighted to be playing our only Scottish festival performance of the summer at Wickerman. It will be a first for Texas but we’ve heard so much about the great festival atmosphere and friendly Wickerman crowds and we’ll be making it a show to remember with a mix of our classic hits and some new material. We look forward to seeing our fans there for a great weekend.’

About The Wickerman Festival

A celebration of art and entertainment, there’s so much more than music at Wickerman. On site activities will include a fun fair, fire walking, music and dance workshops, cinema, grass sledging, Segway hire, wood carving demonstrations and the 7stanes mountain bike display team. The welcoming atmosphere and dedicated children’s area have also earned it a reputation of one of the UK’s most family friendly events.

Located in one of the most stunning corners of Scotland, The Wickerman Festival offers a setting like no other. The scenic main campsite includes both general and late and lively areas with the quiet campsite located at the other side of the field for those looking to get a good bit of shut eye. Pitches for campervans and caravans can also be booked with or without an electric hook up.

Elsewhere, the luxury camping field is something extra special; a handcrafted village of tipis, cloudhouses and yurts, all full of character and boasting the comforts of home. Combining fresh air and natural beauty with glamping extras there are hot-showers, flushing toilets and spacious outdoor areas.

Stewart Cruickshank, Senior Producer BBC Radio Scotland, said:

“goNORTH continues to be one of the UK’s benchmark A&R event and the many attendees at the well-subscribed panels and evening gigs bear witness to that”.

Background:

goNORTH was launched in 2001 to provide a platform for artists from the north of Scotland to showcase for music industry and media representatives on their own patch. Originally hosted in several venues on Aberdeen’s Belmont Street, we briefly relocated to Dundee, before settling in Scotland’s most northerly city, Inverness. The event has since developed into one of the country’s leading Creative Industries Festivals, covering a much wider remit from Screen and Broadcast to Designer Fashion and Publishing.

Each year, goNORTH brings a world class programme of panels, workshops, film screenings, training opportunities, Q&A sessions, camera equipment and special effects showcases, and a global marathon of live music showcases to the north of Scotland.

The live showcases feature contemporary and cutting edge music of all genres, highlighting the best emerging talent from Scotland, the rest of the UK, and a selection of international contenders.

Last year saw the introduction of the goNORTH Festival Tour, an exciting development which takes goNORTH  back to its roots and supports emerging talent across a range of top independent festivals; our 2012 touring schedule includes Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, The Wickerman Festival, Loopallu, B-Fest and Summer In The City 2012.

The introduction of the Festival Tour means a significant volume of artist invited to showcase at goNORTH will also secure additional slots across the touring schedule.

Previous keynote speakers include, Tony Wilson, Alan McGee, Jazz Summers and former UK Music CEO, Feargal Sharkey.

goNORTH features acts across all contemporary music genres, with the line-up split equally between artists from the Highlands and Islands, other parts of Scotland, the UK and the rest of the world. In recent years, the event has brought acts from across Mainland Europe, the USA, Russia, Scandinavia, Australia, Japan and Canada to the north of Scotland.

Selected artists will be compensated with a small payment for their performance. All goNORTH showcases, seminars and workshops are free and open to the public, music industry and media are requested to register.

The goNORTH 2012 Compilation featuring a selection of showcasing artists will also be released direct to industry via Music Week.

Scottish Album of the Year – Longlist for £20,000 Prize announced

click to go to the SMIA Scottish Album of Year Awards website

Click to visit Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) websiteThe Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) has today announced the inaugural longlist for The Scottish Album of the Year Award (SAY). Featuring the twenty highest scoring titles to emerge from the award’s exhaustive nomination process, the list champions an eclectic range of extraordinary albums and artists. From jazz to reggae soundsystems via folk, electronica, house, rock, dub, modern classical (and everything in between), The SAY longlist provides an exhilaratingly diverse snapshot of Scotland’s musical landscape and establishes the award as one of the UK’s most exciting and progressive arts prizes.

The Scottish Album of the Year Longlist is (in alphabetical order):

· 6th Borough Project “One Night In the Borough”

· Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat “Everything’s Getting Older”

· Bwani Junction “Fully Cocked”

· Chris Stout’s Brazilian Theory “Live In Concert”

· Conquering Animal Sound “Kammerspiel”

· FOUND “factorycraft”

· Fudge Fingas “Now About How”

· Happy Particles “Under Sleeping Waves”

· Jonny “Jonny”

· King Creosote & Jon Hopkins “Diamond Mine”

· Mogwai “Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will”

· Mungo’s Hi Fi “Forward Ever”

· Muscles Of Joy “Muscles Of Joy”

· Remember Remember “The Quickening”

· Richard Craig “Inward”

· Rustie “Glass Swords”

· Steve Mason & Dennis Bovell “Ghosts Outside”

· Tommy Smith “Karma”

· Twin Atlantic “Free”

· We Were Promised Jetpacks “In The Pit Of the Stomach”

As well as featuring critically acclaimed albums from the likes of King Creosote and Jon Hopkins (with their Mercury nominated ‘Diamond Mine’), it also demonstrates the success of the award’s egalitarian approach. The Happy Particles album, ‘Under Sleeping Waves’ was previously only available as a download from their Bandcamp page. Muscles of Joy’s eponymous debut was released on vinyl only, with handmade sleeves. Now via this unique opportunity, both albums will be awarded CD manufacturing runs with production costs covered (in the short-term) by the SAY Award, ensuring both artists can capitalise on any heightened profile and have their CDs racked alongside other nominated titles.

Andrew Dixon, Chief Executive of Creative Scotland said: “In such a nation of music lovers, it’s no surprise that The Scottish Album of the Year Award is such an eclectic and entertaining list and brimming with talent. In this Year of Creative Scotland, the Awards are a brilliant way to raise the profile of our musicians. Congratulations to all of the artists!”

Stuart Braithwaite, Mogwai: “We’re extremely honoured and proud to have made the long list for the inaugural Scottish Album of the Year Award. There is an abundance of great music being produced in Scotland every year and I hope that this new award helps us celebrate it and share it.”

King Creosote: “Jon Hopkins and I are proud as punch to end up on the long list for the newest and coolest of prizes, the SAY Award. Of all the awards ‘Diamond Mine’ has been nominated for and subsequently lost, losing this one will smart most.”

Chris Stout: “I am delighted to have made the long list of this exciting new award for Scottish Album of the year. To have an award which represents all music types equally is a great step forward in the way our music is presented to the wider public. I hope and believe this award will go from strength to strength and continue to bring more awareness of the huge wealth of music we have in this country”

Steven Kane, Happy Particles: “We are completely astounded that we managed to make this list at all, considering we put the album out ourselves on bandcamp and had little publicity surrounding it. I think it goes to show the SAY award is not just another ‘pat on the back for the lads’ type award.”

Richard Craig: “To be nominated is both an accolade and a much appreciated recognition of my work on INWARD. The longlist will be a vital juncture allowing artists to reach a wider audience and bringing attention to the independents like myself who work in Scotland.”

Rustie: “Super happy to be considered for this award, recognition is always nice but this is particularly special as it’s from my homeland.”

Ziggy Campbell, FOUND: “FOUND are truly flattered that ‘factorycraft’ has been long listed and is keeping company with some albums from 2011 that we personally consider to be absolute belters. We’re also delighted to be part of an initiative that will help advance the value of music in Scotland.”

Graeme Clark, 6th Borough Project: “The nomination was a real surprise for us to be honest. I’ve never considered the impact of our music in Scotland as we tend to get more interest elsewhere, so it’s really nice to feel that something has clicked at home too.”

James Scott, Conquering Animal Sound: “With ‘Kammerspiel’ coming out at the start of 2011, it’s really cool that the judges have remembered it, and nominated us for this award. Scotland is a small place, but is home to a wealth of artistic talent, it is exciting to see this award come to life, celebrating musical and artistic talent in this country. We’re really pleased to be nominated for the first award, hopefully the first of many!”

Aidan Moffat: “Scotland’s not very good at blowing its own trumpet, but it’s about time we had our own award to celebrate the overabundance of brilliant and diverse music we make every year. For such a small country we produce an inordinate amount of great – and very successful – music, and hopefully this award means that we can be unashamedly proud about it for a few weeks every year.”

Tommy Smith: “I am so very honoured and flabbergasted to be considered for the long list. This recognition will go a long way to cradling the miniscule and spontaneous genre I represent. Many congratulations to the SMIA for supporting Scotland with this brave new initiative. I wish everyone great success and many thanks for the vote of confidence.”

Ross McNae, Twin Atlantic: “We are extremely honoured to be on the long list of contenders for the inaugural Scottish Album of the Year Award. This is a fantastic platform for Scottish artists who are sometimes overlooked for more UK wide accolades. We hope this award that will grow to rival the UK’s more established awards.”

Doug Paine, Mungo’s Hi Fi: “We have generally shunned the music industry establishment as much as it has ignored us. So we were surprised and pleased to hear that we had been nominated for Scottish Album of the Year. At a time when Scotland is becoming known for its vibrant reggae scene and given how Jamaica has been largely overlooked in the great homecoming, it is a great opportunity to celebrate our rich cultural links with the Caribbean.”

Remember Remember: “That our latest collection of cosmic jams is considered to be amongst the best Scottish albums of the year is a quite unexpected bolt from the blue but we are all thrilled and excited to have been included in the Long List.”

Bwani Junction: “Great for Scottish music and chuffed that ‘Fully Cocked’ measured up against a formidable longlist.”

Muscles of Joy: “Muscles of Joy are delighted to be on the long list of the new SAY Award, and we are very appreciative of the platform and support that an award like this has been established to provide. Thanks to Dep Downie for pushing us to make the record! There is an amazing amount of original music happening in Scotland right now. We made our LP on our own terms with no idea of how it would be received, which is an ideal scenario, it would be great if more people could get the chance to do that. We were lucky to get a small but essential amount of funding from Creative Scotland.”

Upcoming key dates:

May 14th – The public can vote for their favourite album from the longlist via The SAY Award website (www.sayaward.com) and a specially designed app. The public’s choice will earn a guaranteed slot on the shortlist.

May 17th – This longlist will be reduced to a shortlist of ten, by a panel of judges.

June 19th – The winning album will be announced at a prestigious ceremony in Glasgow Film City earning a grand prize of £20,000. The nine runners-up will each receive £1,000. All ten shortlisted finalists will receive an artwork from the winner of a unique SAY Award art commission which celebrates the enduring links that exist between music and art. The commission, valued at £20,000, will be offered to graduates from Scotland’s four principal art schools with the winning graduate (selected, in this pilot year, from Glasgow’s School of Art) producing ten artworks to be donated as prizes for the shortlisted finalists.
