Details of the British Fora Do Eixo, which will run under its translated nameclick to go to the Wide Days website for full details of all events Off Axis, are to be included in a special presentation at the Edinburgh event on Thursday 11 April.

The talk will be given by Jeff Thompson, from the Manchester-based Un-Convention organisation which hosts grassroots music events around the world and is spearheading the initiative: “We have supported Wide Days since its launch in 2010 and it is the perfect platform to announce our plans for Off Axis,” he says.

Commenting on the addition to the programme, Wide Days co-organiser Olaf Furniss says: “I am delighted that Wide Days is able to provide the first opportunity in the UK for people to learn about this exciting venture, which has the potential to help many artists.”

In Brazil, the Fora Do Eixo touring network was launched to help acts reach new audiences in cities and festivals in other parts of their country. Musicians with a fanbase in their own region host acts from outside, and in return receive credits which they can use.

Founded in 2005 the network has become a powerful lobby for artists and is set to be the subject of a film by leading music business commentator, Andrew Dubber, and the makers of the documentary, Last Shop Standing.

SPOTIFY DIRECTOR FOR KEYNOTE + STREAMING TALK ANNOUNCED

Wide Days is pleased to announce Spotify director Mark Williamson for the event’s keynote speech, as part of a session devoted to the business of streaming. He will give an overview of Spotify’s position in the industry, opportunities for growth and what this means to artists and rightsholders.

Williamson’s talk will be preceded by a myth-busting overview of the streaming business presented by Andy Zondervan, who is New Business Development Manager at Dutch collection society Buma/Stemra, and responsible for programming interactive and innovation panels at Eurosonic Noorderslag.

The presentations will be followed by a short panel discussion and Q&A featuring both guests, who will also be available for individual, 15-minute meetings with delegates.

“Edinburgh has the highest concentration of Spotify users in the UK, so it is particularly fitting to be speaking at Wide Days,” says Williamson, who heads the company’s Artist Services division in Europe.

Wide Days co-organiser, Olaf Furniss, adds:

“This is a fantastic addition to our programme and offers the music industry in Scotland the first real opportunity to explore an increasingly important area of the business.”

The session will draw on figures relating to global sales of recorded music, due to be published on Monday [April 8].

WIDE DAYS 2013 SHOWCASE ACTS

Wide Days has completed its showcase line up (Band links below).

Masked techno trio Roman Nose, Highland grunge band Garden Of Elks and brass-infused Saint Max and The Fanatics, complete the line up, which also includes Fatherson, Siobhan Wilson, Washington Irving and Fat Goth. All three acts were chosen in consultation with an industry panel.

“We discovered some amazing acts by inviting submissions and it was a hard task to narrow it down to the final selection,” says Wide Days director, Olaf Furniss. “I would like to thank everyone who applied.”

Wide Days deliberately focuses on a small number of acts, working closely with the artists to ensure the showcases are a success. Previous participants include PAWS, Rachel Sermanni, Stanley Odd, Meursault, Withered Hand and FOUND, who have all gone on to sign deals, tour internationally and pick up significant festival bookings.

Admission to the gigs is included in the delegate pass, but a limited number of free tickets are available via the Wide Days website. Registration for the daytime conference – which includes seminars on music publishing, promoters and music photography – range from £25 to £125.

Wide Days is not-for-profit event organised by Community Interest Company Born To Be Wide.

Win A Spot To Play At Hebcelt

click to go to HebCelt websiteHEBCELT STARTS SEARCH FOR A STAR READY TO SHINE

A sought-after stage slot at one of the summer’s major music festivals is going for a song – or rather three songs – with unknown artists being urged to step into the limelight.

The award-winning Hebridean Celtic Festival, which will be headlined by Van Morrison, Dougie MacLean, Capercaillie, The Battlefield Band and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, is again offering a platform for a new band or singer during the flagship event.

Acclaimed singer Julie Fowlis has voiced her support for the contest which will see the successful act following in the footsteps of last year’s winners, Glasgow-based trio Muran who, just six months after forming, played on the main stage of the festival which attracted over 14,000 fans over its four days.

Glasgow-based trio Muran who, just six months after forming, played on the main stage at HebCelt

HebCelt, which is celebrating its 18th anniversary this year, will be held from 17-20 July in Stornoway in the island of Lewis. It attracts interest across the world and was recently selected as one of the Top 10 UK summer festivals by influential music publication Songlines for the third successive year.

The One Step Further competition is open to any young band or performer, aged between 18 and 25 at the time of the festival, playing a genre of music that reflects the general programming of the event. The winner will be able to perform live on either Friday, 19th or Saturday, 20th July within the main arena. They will also receive £250 towards expenses.

Festival Director, Caroline MacLennan, said: “The festival prides itself on helping to bring young talent from throughout the Celtic nations to a wider audience and this competition offers a significant opportunity for an artist or artists to showcase their talent to a large and appreciative crowd. We would encourage performers to put together a creative presentation to sell their music to the judges and perhaps win that coveted slot on stage.”

Julie Fowlis, originally from North Uist, was given one of her first opportunities to sing solo at a festival when she performed at HebCelt in 2003. She has since gone on to international stardom and sang on the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning Disney Pixar animated film Brave.

One of the first inductees to the HebCelt Hall of Fame and an ambassador for the event, Julie said of the One Step Further contest: “This is a wonderful opportunity for a young singer or band to perform live at a major festival and in front of a large and international audience. HebCelt is renowned for promoting up and coming artists and should be commended for providing this platform which could be a real stepping stone to success for someone.”

To enter, artists need to prepare a promotional pack in electronic format that includes links to three good quality recordings of their music, at least one high resolution photograph and a biography. They can also include links to a live performance.

Submissions should be sent by email by 5pm on 12 April to office@hebceltfest.com and marked HebCelt New Talent Submissions.

The judging process will take place throughout next month with the winning artist/s being chosen by 4 May.

The 18th HebCelt is attracting huge interest across the globe. Advance tickets have already been snapped up by fans across the UK and Ireland, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America.

Day tickets were available to buy from 1 March and early sales are encouraging with more than double the number being sold than at the same time last year. More than 70 per cent of tickets sold so far have also gone to off-island fans.

The line-up also includes Karine Polwart, Darrell Scott, Pete Roe, Paddy Callaghan, and local artists Iain Morrison, The Boy who Trapped the Sun and Face the West, as well as Dundee’s Anderson, McGinty, Webster, Ward & Fisher; Lau, voted ‘Best Group’ at this year’s Radio Two Folk Awards; Orcadian eight-piece The Chair; The Hot Seats, from Virginia; Manchester outfit The Travelling Band; Welsh band Rusty Shackle; Fatherson and The Dirty Beggars, from Glasgow and Rose Parade, a four-piece from Ayr.

ABOUT HEBCELT: The 18th HebCelt takes place between 17-20 July, 2013 and will have two main stages on the Castle Green in front of the Lews Castle in Stornoway, as well as performances in An Lanntair and throughout the rural community.

This year the festival has been selected for the third year in succession as one of the top ten UK summer festivals by music magazine Songlines. It emerged victorious as Best Large Festival at the industry-sponsored Scottish Event Awards 2011, in a three-way final with Edinburgh’s Hogmanay and Glasgow’s Celtic Connections.

Visitors from Algeria, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand and the US made the journey to Lewis last year, as well as many from across the UK.

The overseas contingent helped swell the ranks of a 120-strong volunteer army that contributed over 3,500 unpaid man hours over the course of the four days.

HebCelt is supported by Creative Scotland, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Highlands & Islands Enterprise and injects more than £1.5 million annually into the local economy.

It is regarded by critics, performers and festival-goers as one of the top Celtic music festivals in Europe and has twice won the Best Event of the Year award at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards, which is voted for by the public.

HebCelt has been hailed as one of the UK’s top 50 festivals by the Daily Telegraph and one of the top five by The Scotsman.

T Break Stage 2013 – Entries Now Open!

click to go to T Break websiteIT’S TIME FOR T BREAK 2013 : TENNENT’S LAGER’S SEARCH FOR SCOTLAND’S FRESHEST UNSIGNED TALENT BEGINS

Full details on how to submit demos is available on http://www.facebook.com/TennentsTBreak and http://www.tennents.com/tbreak – entries must be submitted before Midnight 29 March.

Tennent’s Lager’s nationwide search for Scotland’s freshest unsigned musical talent begins with the launch of T Break 2013. Since 1996 Tennent’s have given Scotland’s top unsigned acts the chance to play the legendary T Break Stage at T in the Park. As from today, bands and solo acts from across the country can submit their demos for the chance to take to the stage at T in the Park’s 20th year celebrations.

Tennent’s passionately believe in supporting Scotland’s grassroots music scene and T Break offers acts an unrivalled opportunity to showcase their material to music industry experts and fans on the biggest platform for emerging talent at T in the Park – the T Break Stage.

The T Break judging panel is made up of 14 of Scotland’s most influential music industry experts including promoters, bookers, artist managers, music business academics and members of the media.  This team of music aficionados will listen to every demo before handpicking the acts to go on and play the T Break Stage over the 12th – 14th July.

George Kyle, Head of Sponsorship at Tennent’s Lager, said:

“Year after year we see a huge amount of Scottish talent coming through T Break. It’s no secret that we have a vibrant grassroots music scene in Scotland; something Tennent’s believe should be celebrated, encouraged and supported.  T Break achieves this through providing artists with a platform on the T Break Stage at T in the Park and through the industry exposure the bands gain throughout the whole T Break experience.  We can’t wait to hear from bands this year and to see who will be playing the T Break Stage at T in the Park’s 20th year.”

Dave McGeachan from T in the Park festival organisers DF Concerts, sits on the judging panel. He said:

“Every year the other judges and I are bowled over by the amount of fantastic demos submitted to T Break and whittling it down to the final 16 is always a huge challenge. There is always a special buzz at the T Break Stage, a kind of anticipation in the air that you could be about to witness something really special. T Break is an invaluable asset to Scotland’s grassroots music scene and something I’m always extremely proud to be part of.”

T Break 2012 acts Anderson, McGinty, Webster, Ward and Fisher and Brown Bear and the Bandits were named as two of The Scottish Sun’s, ‘Magnificent Seven – Scots acts set to be massive in 2013’. Anderson, McGinty, Webster, Ward and Fisher have also featured in the soundtrack to a nationwide advertising campaign for Caledonia Best and have been nominated for Best New Scottish band at the Scottish Variety Awards 2013.

Anderson, McGinty, Webster, Ward and Fisher, T Break 2012 band, said:

“The experience was invaluable. I suppose when people think you’re good enough to play among the biggest names in the industry you can’t help but feel good about what you’re doing.  It’s wonderful to be sighted among the most exciting up and coming bands of the moment so keep it up T Break! There are plenty of up and coming Scottish acts deserving of their day on the T Break Stage.”

Not only does T Break provide bands with a huge platform to showcase their talent, it also continues to support bands long after they have played the T Break Stage. For example, previous T Break band Fatherson recently played T in the Park’s 20th year launch event in Glasgow’s SWG3 and former T Break band The LaFontaines provided the foot-stomping soundtrack to T in the Park 2013’s launch video.

T Break is open to musicians of all genres and each year attracts talented acts from across the musical spectrum.  To get involved entrants must be 18 or over, live in Scotland, and must be currently unsigned – full details on how to submit demos is available on http://www.facebook.com/TennentsTBreak and http://www.tennents.com/tbreak and entries must be submitted before the deadline of midnight on Friday 29th March.

T in the Park 2013 tickets are on sale now – fans can ensure they’re part of the 20th year celebrations and can get their hands on the ultimate festival ticket of the summer from http://www.tinthepark.com or http://www.ticketmaster.co.uk or call 08444 999 990.

Tennent’s will announce the T Break Stage line-up in May.
