At a glittering award ceremony tonight in Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom, ‘Thirteen Lost & Found’ by RM Hubbert picked up a £20,000 cash prize along with an exclusive piece of artwork made by two emerging artists, Emma Reid (Glasgow School of Art) and Gregor Morrison (Edinburgh College of Art), the joint winners of The SAY Award’s sister prize, The SAY Arts commission. RM Hubbert, winner of the 2013 Scottish Album of the Year said: “I am shocked and delighted at winning. I never expected it. It is testament to all my collaborators that we won.”

The nine other shortlisted artists collected a prize of £1,000 plus a piece of artwork.

Stewart Henderson, Chair of SMIA said: “Congratulations to Hubby on behalf of everyone at The SAY Award and the SMIA. We’ve got another worthy winner and an exceptional album to have emerged from such a strong field.”

On behalf of panel of judges, John Williamson, said: “I have been involved on a number of these types of discussions before and I don’t think any of them have been as passionate or divisive as this one. All of the albums had supporters amongst the judges and the final decision was extremely close. Among the things that impressed across the range of albums were the range of emotions and quality of songwriting. All of these are records made in a modern way without big budgets or big productions and all involved degrees of collaboration and community with other musicians from Scotland and beyond. In the view of the judges RM Hubbert’s album was the one that encapsulated and engaged the most.”

The judging panel included: Douglas Anderson (Author/Broadcaster/Writer), Christopher Brookmyre (Author), Stewart Cruickshank (Radio Producer), Tom Doyle (Author/Journalist), Douglas Gordon (Visual Artist), Kate Molleson (Journalist), Joe Muggs (Journalist/A&R), Jude Rogers (Journalist), Tjinder Singh (Cornershop; Ample Play Records), Rebecca Vasmant (DJ/Producer) and Sue Wilson (Journalist).

Caroline Parkinson, Director of Creative Development at Creative Scotland, congratulated the winner:

“Congratulations to RM Hubbert, winner of the 2013 Scottish Album of the Year. The awards are a fantastic celebration of Scotland’s contemporary musical talent – and also provides a platform for Scotland’s emerging visual artists.”

“It has been a fantastic night that has recognised and celebrated Scotland’s diverse and thriving music scene,” said Jonathan Morrish, Director of Corporate Communications, PPL. “The SAY Awards help illustrate both the breadth and wealth of musical talent in Scotland that contribute so much to the country’s culture and PPL is proud to be associated with such a quality event. It is the first year that we have been associated with the awards and on behalf of our Scottish members we look forward to continuing our support as we look to raise our awareness around the country.”

He added: “Today’s music industry is constantly evolving and as a result today’s recording musicians are having to become increasingly innovative and self-dependent. PPL is proud to support rightholders and performers by providing them with the royalties from the use of their music and helping them continue to fulfil their passion and making music Scotland should be proud of.”

Suzy Clark, Brand Manager, Dewar’s said: “Congratulations to RM Hubbert. It’s the type of album that can only be created by folk who love and live music. We at Dewar’s are proud to be a part of it.”

Ian Manson, Chief Executive, Clyde Gateway: “Congratulations to RM Hubbert. The award is a fitting tribute to Scotland’s eclectic music scene. And what better place for the ceremony to take place than in Glasgow’s premier music venue, the Barrowland Ballroom in the heart of Glasgow’s East End.”

TIREE MUSIC FESTIVAL LAUNCHES TMF UNSIGNED COMPETITION

Tiree Music Festival 2013Unsigned competition winners to open Main Stage of Festival

Returning for a third year, the Tiree Music Festival (TMF) Unsigned Act contest is back by overwhelming demand and the competition is set to be bigger and fiercer than ever. The winning act will open the festival main stage on Saturday 20 July, preceding a stellar line-up including Capercaillie, Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire and Skerryvore.

Acts have until the 18 June to enter by emailing a track, video or link to unsigned@tireemusicfestival.co.uk

Scotland’s Best Small Festival has already had to increase capacity to accommodate a record number of ticket sales after music lovers snapped up the initial allocation for the event. With new sponsorship from asset management and advisory service, Cairn Capital and more bands added to its already fantastic line up, the Inner Hebrides festival is certainly the place to be for unsigned bands looking to showcase their talent.

After entries close on 18 June, the TMF panel will then select finalists from the list of entrants before putting it to the public vote on Twitter and Facebook.

In a special twist, renowned Scottish radio personality, Jim Gellatly – dubbed ‘The voice of new music in Scotland’ – will then face the arduous task of choosing his favourite act from the runners up who will then get to perform the opening slot for Sunday’s bill (21 July).

Says Jim “I’m really looking forward to being part of TMF Unsigned and I know it’s going to end up being really difficult to choose a winner as there is so much talent in Scotland.  Tiree is a brilliant festival and I can’t wait to see the winners open the festival”

The Scottish Album of Year Award shortlist is announced!

WINNING ARTIST SET TO RECEIVE £20,000 AT AN AWARD CEREMONY TO BE HELD AT BARROWLANDS ON 20 JUNE

click to go to SAY websiteThe Scottish Music Industry Association [SMIA] is delighted to announce the shortlist for this year’s Scottish Album of the Year Award (SAY Award). The ten albums that have made it to the shortlist represent the breadth and wealth of work that is being made and produced in Scotland.

Chairing the independent panel of judges, Glasgow Academic, John Williamson, said: “Although there was a strong longlist including some hugely commercially successful albums, the ten chosen for the short list are those that best reflect the range of music made by Scottish artists in 2012. It includes debut albums and ones by people who have been making music for thirty years; solo albums and collaborative projects; genres from folk music to hip-hop. It is perhaps a measure of the collective quality that it is hard to see an obvious winner from the ten.”

He added: “While on the surface they may not have much in common beyond their Scottish connections, it strikes me that each of these albums was coherently and lovingly made by artists with a clear vision of what they were trying to do. The list is merely a reflection of who, in the judges’ opinion, executed that vision best. Across each of the albums there are great songs, voices and instrumental performances. If the award can get some of these incredible records more widely heard – not only in Scotland, but around the world, then it will have done its job.”

The SAY Award Shortlist is: (in alphabetical order)

Admiral Fallow : Tree Bursts In Snow

Django Django : Django Django

Human Don’t Be Angry : Human Don’t Be Angry

Karine Polwart : Traces

Lau : Race The Loser

Meursault : Something For The Weakened

Paul Buchanan : Mid Air

RM Hubbert : Thirteen Lost & Found

Stanley Odd : Reject

The Twilight Sad : No One Can Ever Know (Public Vote winner)

The judging panel included: Douglas Anderson (Author/Broadcaster/Writer), Christopher Brookmyre (Author), Stewart Cruickshank (Radio Producer), Tom Doyle (Author/Journalist), Douglas Gordon (Visual Artist), Kate Molleson (Journalist), Joe Muggs (Journalist/A&R), Jude Rogers (Journalist), Tjinder Singh (Cornershop; Ample Play Records), Rebecca Vasmant (DJ/Producer) and Sue Wilson (Journalist).

The 24-hour voting window on Monday saw The Twilight Sad being voted on to the shortlist by the Public. James Alexander Graham said:  “Thank you very much to everyone who voted for No One Can Ever Know in the public vote. Our third record saw us develop our sound in different ways than before. We always try to push our music forward. From the outside looking in that can be seen to be a risk and there’s a chance that people that like your band might not move forward with you, but not too us. If we aren’t pushing ourselves, we aren’t doing our job right.”

He added: “We’ve been very lucky that people have embraced the Album, so for this record to be included in the shortlist for The SAY Award is very humbling and we’re extremely proud to have been included. 2012 was a great year for Scottish music so for No One Can Ever Know to be seen as one of the 10 best records our country produced is amazing!”

Caroline Parkinson, Director of Creative Development, Creative Scotland said: “Congratulations to the ten shortlisted acts of the SAY Award. It’s great to see Scotland’s talented musicians being recognised and rewarded for their hard work and their great albums.  We wish them all the best for the 20 June”.

Suzy Clark, Brand Manager, Dewar’s: “This is a great day for Scottish music: the diversity of the shortlist really does showcase the best of Scottish talent, something we at Dewar’s are very proud to be part of.”

Peter Leathem, CEO, PPL: “PPL would like to congratulate the ten acts that have been shortlisted.  These are a fantastic and eclectic mix which truly reflect the diversity of Scotland’s music scene.  We are looking forward to what will undoubtedly be a fun filled and exciting night on the 20th June.”

Ian Manson, Chief Executive, Clyde Gateway: “This tremendous shortlist with its mix of new and long-established artists is further evidence that the music industry in Scotland is especially rich in talent right now.  I’m looking forward to welcoming everyone next month to what will undoubtedly be yet another memorable, special and historic occasion here in Glasgow’s East End.”
