Tennent’s Lager put out their annual call in March for Scotland’s unsigned acts to submit their demos to T Break in the hope of landing one of 16 highly coveted slots on the T Break Stage at T in the Park, and they have now announced who will be taking to the legendary T Break Stage this summer.

T Break’s judging panel is made up of 14 of Scotland’s most respected and influential music industry experts who listen to each and every track submitted before coming together to deliberate their shortlists. The judges then decide on the final 16 acts – who will potentially follow in the footsteps of this year’s T in the Park headliner and former T Break band Biffy Clyro – to make up the T Break 2014 line-up.

Simon Neil, Biffy Clyro front man said of their T Break performance in 1999, “It was probably one of the biggest moments of our lives, even now looking back, that first time you feel like a real band is phenomenal…that was literally the break, T gave us the break”

EDINBURGH ‘MUSIC MAKING MONEY’ SEMINAR

click to go to the BTBW event page for this seminarBorn To Be Wide has announced the addition of musician Lorraine McCauley to their ‘Music Making Money’ seminar, which takes place tonight (Thurs 1 May) at Edinburgh’s Electric Circus. Lorraine raised funds to record her debut album, Light In The Darkest Corners, through a successful crowd-sourcing campaign, and this year secured a sponsored Artist Residency in Italy.

Also taking part are Creative Scotland music officer, David Weaver, and Glasgow-based producer/composer Kenny Inglis, whose work is regularly used in TV shows and film trailers. They will be joined by KFM Records owner Scott Macdonald, whose has offset declining album sales by monetising video clips and partnering with brands.

The ‘Music Making Money’ panel will focus on income streams beyond gig fees and selling releases. Visit the ‘event page’ @ http://borntobewide.co.uk/events/

Following the seminar, panel participants will DJ and socialise with the audience. The venue is The Electric Circus, 39 Market Street, Edinburgh. EH1 1DF and the cost is £5.00 or £3.50 for MU members. Doors open at 7pm with the seminar running from 7.30-9.30pm. There are then late DJ sets by the seminar speakers.

“For most musicians, managers and labels, making a living means looking to a range of different income sources,” says Born To Be Wide director, Olaf Furniss. “This panel will look at some of the options and how to make the most of them.”

About Born To Be Wide …..

Born To Be Wide was launched in February 2004 to provide a meeting place for those involved in the Edinburgh music scene and soon began attracting guests from all over the UK. A diverse range of musicians, journalists, promoters, label owners and friends of music, were invited to play their all-time favourite records, unless they were by Morrissey or Joy Division.

Since April 2008, the night has hosted seminars covering a diverse range of music industry topics, including A&R, PR, radio, music journalism, sleeve design, stage craft, management, booking agents and self-releasing.

Born To Be Wide also runs the Wide Days convention, which takes place in Edinburgh in April, as well as the annual Edinburgh Night featuring ten acts playing during The Fringe, all performing ten-minute preview sets.

The organisation has hosted events in partnership with most of the UK’s key music industry associations, as well as creating bespoke panels for the Scottish Parliament, Heart of Midlothian FC and creative industries conference, goNORTH. In 2012 Born To Be Wide was incorporated as a Community Interest Company and in 2013 launched the Off The Record day events for young people interested in working in music.

goNORTH was launched in 2001 to provide a platform for artistes from the north of Scotland to showcase for music industry and media representatives on their own patch. Originally hosted across Aberdeen’s Belmont Street, it briefly relocated to Dundee, before settling in Scotland’s most northerly city, Inverness. Now covering a much wider remit including Screen & Broadcast, Designer Fashion and Publishing, the event has become firmly established as Scotland’s leading Creative Industries Festival.

The goNORTH Festival Tour was introduced in 2011 as an exciting addition which takes goNORTH back to its roots and supports new music and film across some of the finest independent festivals in the country. Their partner festivals for 2014 are Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, Wickerman Festival and Loopallu.

Mamie Coleman, VP Music, FOX: “goNORTH acts as a gateway into the UK market and is a great way for us to access new international artists”.

John Robb: “goNORTH is great on many levels, great line up of bands that goes beyond the usual dustbin indie fare, a beautiful city to hang out in and a surprisingly diverse cross section of people attending making it one of the best of the music conference circuit”.

Sat Bisla, President & Founder, A&R Worldwide: “goNORTH has proven to be Scotland’s premier music showcase and conference event. It continually evolves and brings a great balance of creativity and commercial outcomes. I always find the event productive and a valuable experience”.

Keith Harris, Director for Performer Affairs, PPL: “goNORTH is a much more open seminar. A lot of conferences are expensive, which makes them exclusive. goNORTH makes it easy for the people who really need the information to get it”.

GLASGOW’S COMPOSITION MARATHON IS THIS WEEKEND!

click to go to the Composition Marathon website

Who says there are never enough hours in the day?!

After an extensive and exciting application process, which included the recent recruitment of five of Scotland’s top chamber ensembles, the countdown towards the third and final Scottish Music Centre Composition Marathon has officially begun!

On Saturday 8 March ten of Scotland’s finest emerging and established composers will be paired with one ensemble each and set the invigorating challenge of composing a new work for professional première in less than twenty-four hours. The process then culminates in a live performance beginning at 3pm on Sunday 9 March at The Arches, Glasgow.

Scottish Music Centre - Composition Marathon - Feb14-Ad1Since launching in 2011, the project has served as a unique showcase platform which has generated subsequent opportunities and partnerships for all participants. To date, several of the works produced have been developed and expanded into the musicians’ core repertoire, with countless performances programmed both at home and abroad. Others have been submitted to and won notable competitions and accolades along the way and many, if not all, have served as an innovative launch pad for future collaborations and commissions.

Three years on, the success of the Scottish Music Centre Composition Marathon continues to surpass all of our expectations. Although this project has laid the foundations, if it wasn’t for the driving and determined talent of all our participants we would have never reached the finish line. By the end of the project we will have staged no less than thirty world premieres written and performed by 78 artists – who says there are never enough hours in the day?! – Christopher Glasgow, Scottish Music Centre

Tickets (£12/£10) are on sale now, so be sure to book quick and avoid disappointment @ 0141 565 1000 or www.thearches.co.uk

TENNENT’S LAGER’S SEARCH FOR SCOTLAND’S FRESHEST

UNSIGNED TALENT BEGINS TODAY

Today (3 March) Tennent’s Lager begin their nationwide search for Scotland’s freshest unsigned musical talent with the launch of T Break 2014. Tennent’s Lager have been supporting Scotland’s grassroots music scene through T Break since 1996, giving 16 unsigned artists each year, the chance to play the legendary T Break Stage at T in the Park . Entry for T Break is now open and acts up and down the country can submit their demos for the chance to join Main Stage headliners and former T Break band Biffy Clyro on the T in the Park bill this year.

Tennent’s Lager passionately believe in supporting Scotland’s grassroots music scene and T Break offers an unrivalled opportunity for acts to showcase their material to industry experts and music fans alike on the biggest platform for emerging talent at T in the Park – the T Break Stage. This year’s Friday headliners Biffy Clyro are testament to where this support can help lead to.

T Break’s judging panel consists of 14 of Scotland’s most influential music industry experts including promoters, bookers, artist managers, music business academics and members of the media. This team of music industry experts will listen to every demo submitted before handpicking the 16 acts to play the T Break Stage over the 11–13 July.

George Kyle, Head of Sponsorship at Tennent’s Lager, said: “Tennent’s are extremely proud of T Break and of all the acts that have come through the initiative over the past 19 years. We truly believe that Scotland has one of the best grassroots music scenes in the world and we take great pride in supporting and encouraging these unsigned acts as they try to break into the music industry. It is extremely exciting to watch acts start out on the T Break Stage, with some going on to achieve great success and a prime example of this are this year’s T in the Park headliners, Biffy Clyro”

Dave McGeachan, Senior Promoter at DF Concerts and T Break Judge said: “Year after year we see fantastic acts coming through T Break, many of which we book via King Tut’s and across our other venues across Scotland throughout the year. The atmosphere at the T Break Stage during the festival is always electric and so many bands have gone on to really great things – I look forward to the fantastic talent we are about to uncover this year!”

T Break 2013 acts have had huge success since playing the T Break Stage last year with rock duo Honeyblood heading out on a US tour, including a date at SXSW, The Merrylees supporting Paul Weller on his Forestlive tour dates this summer and three T Break 2013 bands, Machines in Heaven, Pronto Mama and Hector Bizerk all being nominated for Scottish Alternative Music Awards, across many categories.

Louie, Frontman for T Break 2013 band, Hector Bizerk said: “I think T Break exemplifies everything that is great about T in the Park. Every Scottish musician dreams of playing in that arena one day and we were fortunate enough to do so in 2013. Each year T Break has gone from strength to strength. For us to be able to fly the flag for hip-hop on that stage was an incredible experience and the highlight of my summer last year. The response we got from the audience was phenomenal!”

T Break are also delighted to announce their new partnership this year with Glasgow based multimedia music platform Tenement TV. Tenement TV are well known for their signature cinematic live sessions shot in a large tenement flat in Glasgow’s west end. Their sets have showcased many up-and-coming and well established players in the Scottish music scene and beyond. Their online journalism and creative and topical content reaches an international audience, with their YouTube channel alone receiving over 1 million views since it began. T Break are extremely excited to work alongside Tenement TV to deliver all highlights for the T Break Stage this year.

Chae Houston, CEO of Tenement TV said: “As champions of unsigned bands in Scotland, we are delighted to be working in partnership with T Break and Tennent’s Lager for this year’s T in the Park. We remain enthusiastic and supportive of the grassroots music scene here at Tenement TV and have always been proud of T Break’s integral part in providing a platform for Scottish bands. Our partnership will continue to support the music scene of Scotland and we can’t wait!”

T Break is open to musicians of all genres. To get involved entrants must be 18 or over, live in Scotland, and must be currently unsigned – full details on how to submit demos is available on www.facebook.com/TennentsTBreak and www.tennents.com/tbreak and entries must be submitted before the deadline of midnight on Monday 31st March.
