Born To Be Wide’s Edinburgh ‘Fringe’ Night Returns for 2013

Born To Be Wide, the Edinburgh based music seminar and musicians social gathering group, has announced the return of its annual ‘Edinburgh Night’, providing a musical snapshot of Scottish acts performing during the Edinburgh Fringe.

Taking place at the Electric Circus on Sunday 4 August, it will feature ten-minute live shows every half hour, interspersed with DJs from the local music scene playing their favourite four tracks by Edinburgh artists. Renowned dubstep composer Teklo, and Celtic gypsy punks Alba Roma have just been announced to complete the line up for the evening.

The event provides a musical snapshot of Scottish acts performing during the Fringe, with each playing ten minute live set. The diverse bill includes Admiral Fallow, A.J Roach, Alba Roma, Donald Macdonald & The Islands, Gastric Band, Grand Laddie [featuring Bart from EagleOwl with friends], Nasty P, Teklo, The Jellyman’s Daughter and Randolph’s Leap.

These mini-gigs are interspersed with DJs from the local scene playing their favourite four tracks by Edinburgh artists. The Pop Cop’s Sarah McMullan is set to join a line-up which already includes Barrie Henderson who books acts at Henderson’s restaurant, Edinburgh International Book Festival programmer, Roland Gulliver, who has overseen the increase in music content at the event, and George Robertson from Edinburgh’s leading vinyl record emporium, Vox Box. They are joined by Lloyd Meredith [Olive Grove Records], Nicola Meighan [The List/The Herald], Caroline Parkinson [Creative Scotland] and Alan Morrison [Sunday Herald].

Born To Be Wide was launched in February 2004 to provide a meeting place for those involved or interested in the Scottish music scene. A diverse range of musicians, journalists, promoters, label owners and friends of music, invited to play their all-time favourite records unless they were by Morrissey or Joy Division.

Since April 2008 the night has hosted seminars and last year was incorporated as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company. Born To Be Wide’s organisers also host the annual Wide Days music industry convention and the Edinburgh Night.

MUSIC NEWS Scotland was born 20 years ago when dial up broadband was still around and desktop pc’s ruled. So we did what had been done since 220 AD in China and every month put ink on a printing plate, ran some paper over it and hey presto MNS was published (okay it was a wee bit more involved than that, but the basic principle was the same!) Move on to 2011 with high speed broadband and access to the www everywhere and the future was catching up with us rapidly. The volume of information flowing into MNS HQ was more than our monthly issue could cope with, and more and more Scottish music stories of great value were being spiked (an old press term not a dodgy drink). Reaching our vast number of readers in every conceivable nook and cranny of Scotland has always been a challenge monthly but to do that more often was physically not feasible. So we have doffed oor tam o’ shanter to the future and MNS is now a weekly digital publication, and not only weekly now but twice the number of pages than our old printed friend! Along with our MNS GIGguide and MNS FESTIVALS! supplements we are now publishing news and valuable information on Scottish music news every week :) We remain as true as ever to our launch roots of 8 years ago though - MUSIC NEWS Scotland supports all Scottish bands and performers no matter what style of music you’re involved in. Our aim is to circulate music industry news and to help to raise the profile of musicians and improve communications between genres.
