TIREE MUSIC FESTIVAL LAUNCHES WITH A BIGGER BILL THAN EVER!

Scotland’s Best Small Festival, the Tiree Music Festival launched today (Wednesday 3 April 2013) with a bigger-than-ever bill of fantastic music acts including Capercaillie, Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire, Skerryvore and Manran, as well as a brand new family campsite and increased capacity. Taking place on the Island Of Tiree, nicknamed ‘The Hawaii Of The North’ due to its beautiful beaches and picturesque surroundings, the festival offers a unique experience that is about much more than just the music. It attracts audiences from all over the UK and Europe to enjoy a weekend of great bands alongside the added fun of camping next to the white sands of Crossapol Bay, taking on the world famous surf at Balevullin beach, enjoying watersports, biking and the many galleries that the Island has to offer.

Says the festival’s Artistic Director Daniel Gillespie; “After performing at festivals worldwide with Skerryvore I kept thinking how amazing it would to have a festival on my home island of Tiree, that would give something back to the locals and also attract new visitors. Fast forward four years and we are now approaching the 4th TMF having achieved three successive sell-outs and the accolade of being awarded Scotland’s Best Small Festival – it really is a dream come true. TMF 2013 will be our biggest festival to date and will once again showcase Tiree as one of the most stunning locations in the world.”

As part of their 30th year celebrations, this year’s headliners will be Scottish folk icons, Capercaillie. Founded by Donald Shaw and fronted by Karen Matheson, they have developed a reputation as Scotland’s foremost Celtic Band, selling over a million albums and touring in 25 countries. Described as “the most exciting and vibrant band in the field of Celtic music today” (Billboard), their exciting and vibrant live show will make sure the festival finish will be one to remember.

Roddy Hart & The Lonesome Fire are set to make their mark this year with the release of their long awaited eponymous album and they will also join the bill alongside Tiree natives and multi-award winning folk-rock band Skerryvore, who will no doubt get the 1500 strong crowd dancing. Mànran, have recently rocketed to the top of the Scottish music scene with their powerful combination of Gaelic/English songs, making them an exciting addition to the TMF bill.

Electric Folk band Washington Irving, who recently supported Frightened Rabbit across the UK, will also be making an appearance, as will indie fiddle act Blazin’ Fiddles, and one of the most celebrated and successful Scottish folk bands of recent times Breabach, who were named ‘Best Group’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2011.

Other acts performing across the weekend includes English folk rock group Coast, Brown Bear & the Bandits whose folk guitar licks, celtic airs and pop hooks with meaningful lyrics, have seen them support Pete Docherty and play to a sold out King Tuts. Ceilidh bands Skipinnish and Gunna Sound will raise the roof and have the whole TMF audience dancing, while Trail West will present their exciting twist on the traditional ‘west coast’ ceilidh band style.

Joining the line-up are the Scott Wood Trio, Culann, Lori McTear, The Youth & Young, Room 16, Na hEileanaich, with many more acts to be announced.

The Community Village, which is located right beside the festival site and campsite, will once again be a hive of entertainment, activities and music workshops as well as housing all the delicious locally sourced festival food and trade stalls. The brand new Family Campsite will offer a quieter area for those who want to bring their whole brood and will have access to showers.

Getting to the gorgeous island is easy with Flybe flying directly from Glasgow, or you can enjoy the train to Oban and then catch one of the regular Caledonian MacBrayne ferries.

About MUSIC NEWS Scotland

MUSIC NEWS Scotland was born 20 years ago when dial up broadband was still around and desktop pc’s ruled. So we did what had been done since 220 AD in China and every month put ink on a printing plate, ran some paper over it and hey presto MNS was published (okay it was a wee bit more involved than that, but the basic principle was the same!) Move on to 2011 with high speed broadband and access to the www everywhere and the future was catching up with us rapidly. The volume of information flowing into MNS HQ was more than our monthly issue could cope with, and more and more Scottish music stories of great value were being spiked (an old press term not a dodgy drink). Reaching our vast number of readers in every conceivable nook and cranny of Scotland has always been a challenge monthly but to do that more often was physically not feasible. So we have doffed oor tam o’ shanter to the future and MNS is now a weekly digital publication, and not only weekly now but twice the number of pages than our old printed friend! Along with our MNS GIGguide and MNS FESTIVALS! supplements we are now publishing news and valuable information on Scottish music news every week :) We remain as true as ever to our launch roots of 8 years ago though - MUSIC NEWS Scotland supports all Scottish bands and performers no matter what style of music you’re involved in. Our aim is to circulate music industry news and to help to raise the profile of musicians and improve communications between genres.
