Knowing Right from Right – Copyright Talk Glasgow

Songwriters, musicians, artists – they all have one thing in common, in that they create and own intellectual property, and their copyrights are very much the currency they deal in. The whole issue can be a minefield for both creative people and for the record labels, websites, production companies, studios, etc – that record, manufacture and market these works.

MCPS Scotland, together with the SMIA, is hosting a seminar at 6pm on Thursday 13th Oct at The Scottish Music Centre, Candleriggs, Glasgow aimed at untangling the copyright maze.

Speakers will be Stuart Fleming, Senior Member Relations Manager (Scotland & Northern Ireland) for PRS for Music, Keith Harris, Director of Performer Affairs for PPL and Duncan McCrone, Senior Manager MCPS Scotland. They will talk about their individual organizations, the rights they represent and the various income streams artists, musicians, writers and composers should expect from their intellectual property rights. This will be followed up by a Q&A and there will be opportunity to chat over a coffee afterwards.

Keith Harris

Keith Harris joined PPL in 2006. He started in the music industry in 1974 working for Transatlantic – a small independent UK label. In 1976 he joined EMI Records where he initially worked for several in-house EMI labels in the promotions department. These included Rocket where he worked on the Elton John album ‘Blue Moves’, Fantasy, Ariola and EMI International. He then joined Motown becoming General Manager working with artists such as Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. He left in 1978 to work with Stevie Wonder and became Operations Manager for his companies.

In 1982 he formed his own management company and was involved in the management of various UK based artists – whilst also continuing to represent Stevie Wonder. He is a Senior Fellow of the University of Westminster School of Music, Film and Fashion where he has lectured since 1993. He is a former Chairman of the MMF, the managers’ trade body and he is the Chairman of Musictank. He was made an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Westminster in November 2007.

About MUSIC NEWS Scotland

MUSIC NEWS Scotland was born 20 years ago when dial up broadband was still around and desktop pc’s ruled. So we did what had been done since 220 AD in China and every month put ink on a printing plate, ran some paper over it and hey presto MNS was published (okay it was a wee bit more involved than that, but the basic principle was the same!) Move on to 2011 with high speed broadband and access to the www everywhere and the future was catching up with us rapidly. The volume of information flowing into MNS HQ was more than our monthly issue could cope with, and more and more Scottish music stories of great value were being spiked (an old press term not a dodgy drink). Reaching our vast number of readers in every conceivable nook and cranny of Scotland has always been a challenge monthly but to do that more often was physically not feasible. So we have doffed oor tam o’ shanter to the future and MNS is now a weekly digital publication, and not only weekly now but twice the number of pages than our old printed friend! Along with our MNS GIGguide and MNS FESTIVALS! supplements we are now publishing news and valuable information on Scottish music news every week :) We remain as true as ever to our launch roots of 8 years ago though - MUSIC NEWS Scotland supports all Scottish bands and performers no matter what style of music you’re involved in. Our aim is to circulate music industry news and to help to raise the profile of musicians and improve communications between genres.
